So, there are 4 ports to connect usb onto the dell 2001fp. I try to connect the mouse into one, but none work. I assume that i need another wire to run from the monitor to the mac's usb port, thus adding another wire...for no reason. Am i right? I'd really like to hook up the mouse and keyboard to the monitor's usb. I"m on a mini, short on usb ports.

The usb port on the Dell might look a little different than what your used to, it should be more square like, the same used for most printers and scanners. The cable that came with it has that wierd squareish end and a normal usb port on the other. plug the regular usb end into your mini, then the wierd end into the wierd port on the display, then the other 4 ports will work. best of luck.
