Dell Wireless N Card in Macbook Pro Core Duo

Hi,

I would love to upgrade my mbp core duo for nothing else besides improved airport reception. I've been hearing great things about the dell 1500 wireless n card and how it works great with macbook pros.

Here are some questions for anyone who is familiar with this:
1. Have you had any issues with installation?
2. Are you worried about possible problems with software updates in the future (since it's not an apple card)?
3. I don't have a wireless n station, will I still be able to get it to show "n" (I want to make sure the card is working)?

This would be exactly what I'm looking for!

I think you only get improved reception with an 'n' base station .

I'll have to check on that...

I understand to have improved speeds and things like that I would need a new station, but I thought just by installing this card I would get better reception if nothing else.

How about my other questions? Any ideas?

Seems kind of pointless. You would only get extended range if you were running in 802.11n mode. The card won't make a difference if you're just using G. Plus the installation is probably a pain in the ass and will void your warranty.

So my advice: Get an Airport Express to extend your network. Put it like halfway in between where your router is and where you use your computer, and you'll get better reception.

2. Nope, it appears to be the same card apple uses in the macbook pro CD (with the 2 antennas) and my "about this mac" sees it as "vendor apple".
3. yes, mine does.

I got mine off ebay, $45 bucks. Put it in with the 00 philipps screwdriver (picked one up from radio shack). Make sure you use the right #00 screwdriver. Go to ifixit and see how to take it apart. It took me about 20 minutes. Would probably take me 5 now!

Great, I bought 2 of these dell cards, can't wait to get them. 1 for the mbp, 1 for the mini. Hope it makes a difference!

Am I right to assume that this uses the same chip as the mac pro card (broadcom)? So theoretically, since it recognizes it as an apple card, it should be okay, right?

What did you do with the old cards?
