Desabling Edge on 2g 3.0. Please help =)

So I bought a 2G Iphone in the states and fell in love with it. I had it upgraded to 3.0, unlocked and JB, so that I could use it in Nicaragua, where I live. I have noticed that the battery life is very short though, not much longer than a few hours. I have read and thought it might be due to the Edge, the infamous E in the right corner, though the wifi connects fine as well, and I don't need internet all the time, just in wifi connectable areas.

Would disabling this E be the answer to short battery life? If so, what are the steps for doing it?

EDGE is your cellular connection. if you turn it off, you can't make calls. If that's ok for you and you don't need WiFi unless it's around, just put your iPhone in airplane mode until you need WiFi.

thanks for the quick response. I am new to MacRumors and didn't know how fast people would respond.

The thing is that I Do need the phone, but it seems that I am being charged for internet when the wifi signal is not there. And as a result cannot maintain minutes on the phone. If disabling the Edge is not the solution, does anybody know what would be?

I believe you can disable data to avoid data charges by going to http://www.unlockit.co.nz/unlockit/ and installing a fake carrier file.

I don't think the fake carrier file thing actually turns off the EDGE modem. Are you in a place where there isn't cellular data -- what state is the E in most of the time? You shouldn't get such short battery life purely because the EDGE modem is on. The original iPhone should be able to handle all day use with intermittent web/phone/etc and overnight recharges without much trouble. If you play games, those burn battery life very quickly, but just the EDGE modem shouldn't cause you a problem, perhaps unless you are constantly coming in and out of service areas -- phones (all phones) tend to burn battery quickly when they are "searching" for a carrier.

No, but, as you can see from the comment I was responding to, she is bring charged for EDGE data when she has no Wi-Fi, and therefore cannot keep minutes on her phone. The fake carrier file will at least prevent her being charged for data.

Jailbreak the iPhone and then install SBSettings. In there, you can disable edge and still make calls. That stops anything from being able to use data and yes, it will make the battery last longer. I do it on my 2G iPhone which is running a GoPhone sim card.

Very good point. I had forgotten the OP was jailbroken. Yes, SBSettings has a very effective EDGE toggle.

Sorry, I missed that part, and wasn't really responding to you directly. Just pointing out that anything short of your solution below wouldn't change the battery effect anyway.

It doesn't matter since what service you get depends on the phone. Put a GoPhone pay as you go sim in the 3G and you have instant 3G service without paying a 3G bill.

AT&Ts 3G service is turned on regardless of the service you are paying for.

Go to Cydia, and search for "SBSettings." Install it. To open SBSettings, swipe your finger from left to right across the status bar at the top of the screen. Tap "More" on the bottom left to get to the settings page. Tap "Set Toggles" on the Settings page, and turn on the EDGE toggle. Close SBSettings by clicking the home button. Your iPhone will respring. Open SBSettings again as above, and turn off EDGE using the toggle you added.

It seems your biggest concern is the data charges, you should just disable data roaming. That way you'll still be able to use the phone functionality but not have the data bill.

This will not work. Disabling data roaming only applies when you are out of your home network, in a foreign country. The original poster is using a Brazilian PAYGO SIM in Brazil and is being charged for data use on her home network. Disabling data roaming will not help her at all. She needs to turn off EDGE data entirely.
