This is just another take on the decision making process between Apple/iOS and Android. I'm not completely in love with either, so for me it's more of a compromise, so I started thinking in my head what my dream phone would be. Perhaps in describing it the decision will become more clear.
Hardware:
Apple is the clear leader for me in fit, finish and materials. That said, I'm in the big screen camp. Give me something in the 4.7-5" range. But it still needs to have accurate color calibration. Every time I pick up a Samsung and go to a webpage, the white background looks too cool and has a blue tone to it. It's gotten to where I can see it even on pictures and home screens. It just does not have accurate colors. So for me I want the accuracy of the Apple display or the HTC One. On that note, I also love the front facing speakers on the HTC One. That is pure brilliance. I don't use my camera a whole lot as I have a very nice DSLR kit, but I do want the best possible in the 8-13 MP range that does well in low light. Stuff as much battery as you can in there and give it 64-128 gig of internal storage. I don't care for messing with SD cards.
Software:
Again, Apple wins in polish. Everything looks clean. The upcoming control center looks great and solves all those issues. I'm not real particular in notifications, though I do like being able to quick reply from the lock screen ala intelliscreen. The big things I want from Android are the customizable grid setup. Let the user specify the grid size and put any icon they want anywhere on that grip. I also like widgets. I like going to my main home screen, seeing my weather, my music player and my wallpaper. For the music player, I'm completely invested in iTunes and need the ability to sync with iTunes. That said, iSyncr works fine so Android could work for me. I would also borrow the lockscreens from Android. I like the latest abilities to have a second "page" on the lockscreen for some app you frequently use. For me, it would likely be the music player. You also need the iPhone dialer. Why Android doesn't have visual voicemail built into the dialer baffles me. Wonder if it's a patent thing...
In looking at those, my biggest gripes with Apple are with the screen size (can't be fixed) and some layout/customizability (can be fixed with jailbreak.) With Android, it's the overall polish of the OS that bothers me. The lack of iMessage is also a bummer, though all those closest to me have unlimited texting so it's not a big deal.
Overall, I wish I could put jailbroken iOS 7 on an HTC One with a better camera.
What will I do in September? I'll have my choice of a 5S on iOS 7 and wait for a jb, stick with my 5 on jb iOS 6, or switch to the HTC One.
