For some reason I couldn't turn up any useful Google results.

I've designed a quick icon in Photoshop that I'd like to use for a NeoOffice icon because it's fugly and needs to go away. How can I convert that PSD to a usable icon file? I've got CandyBar installed, but it won't let me use a PNG/JPG/GIF. It has transparency on a large portion so I'll need to set that too.

Any help appreciated. Thanks

if you have xcode, search for icon composer in spotlight. it is a program that you drag and drop a png versoin of the icon in and it can save it as the mac os x icon format, .icns

I just recently figured out how to do this. :)

Erase the background and save it as a transparent PNG, then download this free app called Iconverter. Save it as an ICNS, then you're off to download another free app, Icns2Rsrc, which you put the ICNS into, and voila! You now have an icon that you can copy from the "Get Info" window into anything you like.

It took days of Googling and MR searching to get this right. :D

What do you mean copy it from any Get Info window?
I'm trying to do this with CandyBar btw, unless there's another way? Right now I've gotten as far as having the PNG transparent how I want it, but when I drag that image into CandyBar it just shows a file icon like any image would that is going to open in Xee. I'm so confused...

Nevermind. Just got it figured out. I saved to transparent PNG from photoshop, then used Icon Composer (XCode developer tools) to convert to ICNS file. Then used Icns2Rsrc to convert to RSRC and then drug that to CandyBar and it worked :D

Thanks for all the help guys. that was far more difficult than it should have been.

Now i just need to work on creating icons worth looking at...

I do it exactly the same way, except with FastIcns and IconDroplet. ;)

Check out http://www.favicon.co.uk it's very usefull for turning any image to an ico file which will work with Mac OSX, Windows or Linux. I found the site after stuffing around for ages with Photoshop's stupid ICO plugin.

iStockphoto is also a good reason for icon ideas. I hope this helps :apple:
