I have two computers, one running Sierra, with documents and desktop in the cloud, and one running El Capitan. I'd like to know if there is some way of synchronizing the local desktop folder on my El Capitan mac with the desktop folder in iCloud, so that items on my Sierra mac's desktop will appear on my other computer's desktop, and vice versa.

Thanks

Check out this little app "iClouDrive".
Install it, drag your DeskTop Folder into it and report back to us here how it worked.
Thanks, but I don't think that's what I want.

Thanks for replying, but I don't see how that could resolve my problem. That app came out before iCloud Drive existed, I believe, and just creates a sort of iCloud Drive. What I want is for the Desktop folder already in my iCloud Drive, and therefore containing the contents of the Desktop folder on my Sierra computer, to sync with my local Desktop folder on my El Capitan computer. In other words, I want all the benefits of Sierra's documents and desktop in the cloud, without upgrading to Sierra on one of my computers.
