I inadvertently clicked Remove from Dock and lost a folder of files that originally resided on my Desktop, then moved to a folder on my Dock. I know TM will restore files, but will my most recent Time Machine backup allow me to restore a desktop? (I don't know the names of the files.)

2018 MBP running Safari and the most recent Mojave.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions, responses, etc.!

"Remove from Dock" does not delete files. The files are still on your computer somewhere. You can't easily just restore your dock settings from Time Machine.

chrfr, I was afraid that TM wasn't the answer to my lost folder problem. I believe that Remove from Dock didn't delete the folder; I just haven't found it using the searches I'm familiar with, e.g., Spotlight.

Any further suggestions...?

Can you open the application which you last used to open one of the files to see if there's an "open recent documents" option?

I opened Libre Office and checked four recent doc's that I know were in the missinig folder. Each attempt brought an error msg saying that the document doesn't exist. The good side of that is that they were not important at all and can be replaced. Several documentes that are important, and that I thought were in that folder, apparently were not because they came up when I clicked on them.

I guess at this point I'm beating a dead horse. I'll carry on and see what missing doc's are needed as time goes by.

Thanks for responding and sticking with the problem with me!

Then something else is going on. If there was actually a folder on your desktop that got deleted, restoring that with Time Machine is trivial. Having no idea what the files are called or where they were saved makes recovery a lot more challenging.

Option+Command+Space while in Finder opens up a Spotlight window that has a plus sign on the right hand side that you can use to go further with your searches. Here you can narrow the search down to almost anything you want. You could also use a different app entirely called EasyFind on the Mac App Store to locate files in that manner. Spotlight might not have it indexed and EasyFind could find the stuff you look for.

I used Easy Find, bugt no joy. I'm writing the file off at this point.
