Over the last few days my iMac running El Capitan has started to perform actions slow and jerky,e.g when i open a tab it use to open straight away but now there is a delay and if i open an app from the dock it's not a smooth action but jerks in to action also when i wake from sleep i get a nearly black screen for about 5 secs before the login screen

It could be early signs of a dying hard drive. What kind of drive do you have in your machine? Is is a spinning hard drive, SSD or both (Fusion Drive)?

Thanks Fravin i had a look at activity monitor and found a photo storage app stuck and using a lot of memory so binned that and things seem to be running good at the moment
