Desmume way too slow

Trying to use it to play Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul silver, but it is far too slow. Would use No$GBA but that stops saving at a certain point. If you have any tips as how to speed up desmume 0.9.7, or have a faster version I can use, it would greatly be appreciated. Thanks again
