Determining which hack was used

I'm hoping some of you with more experience in this field can help me out. The story is that I bought an iPhone today and it was already unlocked (in the country I'm currently in it's not really possible to buy a virgin one).

So now I'm stuck because I'm having problems finding out what software was used for unlocking it. There is no installer app in the main menu. Actually there is no visual hint at all except for the chinese input method showing up when I try to type in special characters.
Port 22 isn't open either.

According to the settings it's version 1.0.2 (1C28) on model MA712 and the modem is 03.14.08_G.

I am in the same boat

I want to get an iphone. Here in Honduras you can buy any phone unlocked and choose your carrier. Almost every cellphone shop carries the iphone. They must use something to unlock them so that they can be used with the local GSM carriers.

I played with one tonight and I could see that it had the 1.0.2 firmware (no itunes store icon)

How can I know waht method they used to unlock them? Should I consider updating it or just leave it as it is?

I'll ask him as soon as I get back to the market where I bought it (it's not really an official shop). However, I highly suspect that the people in those markets buy them hacked as well.

hdsalinas: I wouldn't try to update a hacked phone if you don't know which hack was applied - it's quite likely you'll brick it.
You should ask the seller and then find a way to "virginize" it prior to updating the firmware.

One thing I forgot to mention is that the seller switched the language from Chinese to English before he sold it to me. But I can't figure out how he did that (nothing in settings). So maybe there is some trick to see the hack's features like a dial combination?


Edit: Sometimes I tend to be very impatient - I bricked my iPhone today and after 5 hours of command line fun and trial-and-error I've got 1.1.1 up and running. Still wouldn't recommend to tinker without any knowledge about the hack already installed - what I did was just dumb and I was lucky I didn't end up with the most expensive piece of trash I've ever owned. In case someone fubars baseband like me I recommend virginizer_pack.
However, I still don't know whether the original hack on my iPhone was IPSF or anysim. Would be useful information for further upgrades.
