DeusEx: Never played, should I?

I've been running some games through bootcamp with my GPU overclocked and I have been surprised with the performance.

I'm kinda new to PC gaming, but not gaming in general and I've been able to run games like UT3, Bioshock, F.E.A.R., and others at impressive settings.

I've been looking around at games I should try and Deus Ex seems to be one of them. Can others here let me know what they think of this game and at the same time let me know what else I should try?

Of course. It makes BioShock feel like a really CRAPY game, just another repetitive FPS. Also, if you enjoy Deus Ex, go back further then play System Shock, then System Shock 2. You'll need DosBox to run Shock, unless you have a rare Mac version.

Also try out Dead Space. It's not as good as the System Shock Series, but it's still an enjoyable game none the less.

And if you like RPGs and shooters, Mass Effect is one of the best in years. The second one isn't that bad either.

Thanks, from what I saw on youtube it seemed like Bioshock was inspired by the game a lot.

Any issues with running the game? I'm wondering because I would be running on Windows 7 through bootcamp.

Play System Shock 2 as well; after-all BioShock is just System Shock "lite".

I highly recommend Deus Ex (I wish they would update it for OSX).

I don't have the Steam version, but my retail game installed and played just fine under XP 64. I'll need to try it out on Win 7 64, which I have installed on my 17", but I'm assuming it will work fine.

Too old, bad graphics, never enough goddamn lockpicks, and never figured out where on the head registers as a headshot, resulting in a lot of me getting splattered.

Far prefer Half Life 2, and Crysis.

EDIT: If you want a really awesome old FPS, try the Marathon series, and the marathon mods, eg. Eternal, EMR and RED. I loved them.

EDIT 2: I want the Black Mesa team to hurry up and finish their Half Life port. Having never played the original, I'm looking forward to it, if they ever finish, of course!

Marathon is redeemed by the fact the player does not require lockpicks, and does not require headshots to not die.

Your opinion. DeusEx has a great memorable story (the games a definite classic), RPG elements, tons of player choices to go through levels. Combat isn't what you make it out to be (makes me think you didn't really give it that much of a chance); DeusEx's combat is meant to be approached stealthily and tactically. Oh, and lockpicks aren't as crucial as you make them out to be.

Well, I must try it out then, because I regard DX as one of the best RPG's I've ever played.

If you can get your hands on a cheap copy of DX, I'd recommend you look for a Cider-ised version of it to run on OS X. It's how I relived the game again.

I also adored Freespace 2 and the Freespace mod. Fantastic space-fighting game.

@ DesmoPilot: I in fact finished the game. I will admit though my opinion of it was highly skewed through my use of a cider port which would crash every few minutes.

But I would like to re-iterate my annoyance at creeping up behind someone, aiming at their head point blank, pulling the trigger, and they just go "Ow", turn around, and shoot you. This also pissed me off.

Oh, and the fact that energy doesn't regenerate, meaning I end up saving it, and never end up using it.

Remember loving that game when it first came out, not sure how it'd stand up to the test of time now though. Quite interested in the new one that's coming out, Deus Ex Human Revolution but that's not due till March next year.

I bought them both on Steam, downloaded but haven't played yet. I know they're great. I played a bit of the second game on the original Xbox and from what I remember it was great.

You obviously didn't play long enough then. The great thing about Deus Ex is that it gives you the freedom to complete the level in several ways. If you don't have enough lockpicks to get through a locked door, there are usually at LEAST 3 other ways to get around it, if you take the time to explore and look.

Regarding difficulty on Deus Ex I've always played on realistic/highest difficulty and never found combat particularly challenging provided that you approach situations tactically as Desmopilot said. You can take enemies down with one headshot and they can also get lucky and do the same to you - however that's where approaching conflict carefully pays off rather than just running blindly in

Exactly. DX isn't like Half Life or Doom 3, when you finish it once, you've seen it all. The half dozen or so times I've finished the game, I remember taking a completely different tact: violent, non-violent, technical, exploratory, visiting all the secret/highly locked up areas and of course playing for the hell of it.

The trick for killing someone in one shot it is waiting for the reticule to get small, and shooting from a medium distance away. If you're close up, use the dart in the crossbow.

You need to stead and aim, and improve your character skills to get headshots. You don't start off as a killing machine.

Exactly. Depends on your character's speciality, some ways are harder than others.

Yep, the second never made it to the Mac.

There are patches for SS2, so that it will run on newer OSs(At least the 64-bit flavors) along with appearance mods. I downloaded and installed these patches on more than one attempt to get SS2 running on my last two PCs(Both of which run XP64.) and have had only partial success. At least it plays, but only for about a half hour before it completely locks up my system.

If SS2 ever hits STEAM, it's a definite buy, since that means it will run.

Definitely, play it!

Deus Ex is an amazing game that is just full of atmosphere even though the graphics are rather blocky and colours drab. It's a game you play more carefully than Half Life or Bioshock and it really rewards planning ahead.

As an overall experience, it's just a shade behind No One Lives Forever as the best game I've ever played, and it loses solely because it's very serious and 'end-of-days'-ish compared to NOLF's humour and colour.

As a huge, huge plus, Deus Ex works flawlessly in crossover games.
