Developer?? So confused

I went to Apples website to investigate how to be a developer for iPhone apps. But now I am so confused!!

Do you have to pay to be a developer? I signed up but didnt see where it made me pay or anything, and it wont let me use 4.0 so I assume I am some sort of free developer account??

Please clear things up for me if you can on how all of this works!

If your not a developer and your only interest is to upgarde to OS 4....don't do it. Wise up and read some of the other posts for users upgrading to OS 4. It's a beta version intended for developers only....users have no business upgrading.

It's $100 USD to get into the developer program, and if you can't figure that our, do yourself a favor and don't be a developer. So you can wait for the 4.0 to be publicly released in the summer, or you can purchase a spot on a developers registered UDID list. But for now, if you need to downgrade, check out my guide.

I am not sure why there are personal attacks and thoughts of me only wanting to upgrade to 4.0...

I want to be a developer but when I signed up and verified my email it never asked for any payment and now I can't even download the SDK...

So my question was why did it let me "become a developer" for free and then not let me develop? Did something go wrong? And do you have to pay to be a developer or just for the SDK? I am just confused it is my first time going into this... I'm sure you were not always use to how it works... So could someone actually help me and not just mock me?

To the OP: As others have stated you would need to pay the $100 fee in order to access the beta. Now, be warned that as with any beta, problems do exist. If you still want to persue it you will want to take a look around the internet and see if anyone is having major problems with it.

I haven't looked into it myself so it may work fine for all I know.

The "free" developer signup gives you access to download Xcode and the other developer tools... along with the iPhone simulator.

You'll be able to write code and install apps to the iPhone simulator, but NOT to a real iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad.

To install apps to a real device, you need to sign up with the $99 paid developer program, which will also allow you to submit your finished apps to the iTunes app store.
