I was a Treo user who switched over to an iPhone and want to know if I wrote an application for the iPhone that would only matter to me, would it be listed in the app store? What I have done in the past for my Treo was I wrote a program that calculates my regular salary, overtime and double time pay. That would be of no use to anyone else. So if I pay the developer fee, can I run the app on the iPhone to debug and does the app stay on the iPhone or does it have to be submitted and approved by the app store? Is there a way to keep the app private?

You can keep it private.

the $99 gives you the ablitly to put it on your phone (+99 others)

Not req. to put it on the app store.

Edit:

That sounds like a simple app. Have you looked to see if there are any apps on the store that allows you to do basic calcs like this, or even build it as a web app?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it is a horribly simple app. There might be an app close to what I need, but its more fun to make my own. A web app was also a consideration.

You might also just consider writing a web app for it and stick it on some personal web space. That's free to do (plus the cost of the web space, if any).

Edit: replied right when you did and reiterated the web app idea. Not fast enough, I guess. :)

Have you looked at Go Figure Lite? I haven't tried it, but the description makes it sound like you can set it up to do custom repetitive calculations.

Sign up, write it, and put it in the store. Someone else WILL find it useful unless it is specific to your employer and no other company in the world works the same.

You will have trolls that think its pointless and say use a calculator. They are probably 14 and don't understand that a few taps save time and time is money. Ignore them. Remember, these people think the world should be free. The only other questions is free or not free. If you put a decent UI on it charge, you might not get that many downloads, but even one a day at $0.99 is $365 a year, you are a Financial Analyst, so I shouldn't be explaining this part. ;) Good Luck!

And if he spends 50 hrs a year in support on the app. And bills his time at $125 hr for his financial consultant clients. How much of a loss would he take on that $365 "profit" ;)

...and it works there is not 50 hours of support a year for something this simple. I have spent about 1 hour in support over 1 month and that was enough to get good reviews. If support is a worry then just make it free and don't support it. Alternatively, if you just don't care, you don't have support it. You can even mention to buyers that only limited support is offered.

I your serious and want to do more development, then offer better support and charge more.

Not quite. 365 sales of a 99 cent app only gets the developer $255.50 before taxes.

And by your math, he would still lose money.

Indeed you are correct, but you are only looking at monetary gain. My point wasn't really about making money, it is that he could get something in return for his work.

That something might be $255 dollars, or it might be the time he enjoys learning the SDK and writing the app. He said he wrote an application for the Treo, so apparently the OP has coded in the past.

My original statement only pointed at the bare minimum amount he could if income gained from sale were his motivation. I forgot to take out Apple's cut. There are many hobbyists and tinkerers writing apps for the app store, which is better for everyone. Some might strike out, but many will come up with great ideas. Also, how much time he spends supporting an app can be zero or more hours.

You keep talking people out of writing apps, I'll keep talking them into it. ;) There IS virtually unlimited space in the App Store contrary to what some believe. The application in the store are not stored on some mystical "shelf" that is running out of space.

EDIT:

By not supporting it, and putting it in the store for $0.99 cents he still makes more than he would have made if he keeps it private, which is what I was getting at in the first place. If there is a spreadsheet app that can do this, then yes, that would make the most sense, unless he just wants to write the app. Which I encourage.

i'm interested in a pay calculator

I'm a registered nurse that would like a salary calculator, I too have a regular rate of pay, a 1.5 times pay and a double time pay and could use a calc. Let me know. I'm interested.
