Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitor users can now monitor their blood sugar data in real time on an Apple Watch without having their iPhone to hand, the U.S. medical device manufacturer has announced.

Using its own dedicated Bluetooth connection, the Dexcom G7 Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) System sends glucose information and personalized alerts directly to the user's Apple Watch, allowing them to "go for a run, enjoy a dinner out, and feel confident leaving their iPhone behind," according to the Dexcom press release.
"At Dexcom, our users are at the heart of everything we do. Direct to Apple Watch has been one of our most requested features and we're thrilled to roll it out to Dexcom G7 users in the U.S. and around the world," said Jake Leach, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Dexcom. "We've long believed that people with diabetes should be able to view their CGM data where and how they choose. Direct to Apple Watch is a testament to that, allowing people with diabetes flexibility and choice in how they manage their health."
Prior to the update, the Dexcom G7's Apple Watch app enabled users to consult a watch face complication, but there was a three-hour delay with synced data. Users will continue to need an iPhone to set up the G7 GCM with their Apple Watch, and the iOS Health app is still required to view blood glucose data alongside other biometrics tracked by Apple Watch.

The Direct to Apple Watch feature is now available to G7 GCM users in the U.S., U.K., and Ireland, with the feature coming to additional markets later this month. Users will need the Dexcom G7 app version 2.1, an Apple Watch Series 6 or later running watchOS 10 or later, and an iPhone running iOS 17 or later. More information can be found on the Dexcom website.

I wonder if this works with the Tandem pumps? I just use the pump display for everything. I hate being T1 lol
Definitely works with Tandem pumps, I've got a Tslim and that sets a direct connection up to the G7, so it actually doesn't need an iPhone at all to see your BG

The G7 can connect with 3 devices. I have it to my phone, watch and MOBI. Not sure exactly what you mean by working with tandem pumps because G6 and 7 are both fda approved for both the tslim2 and mobi.

If they could just let go of the strangle hold on my notifications that’s be swell..
I just switched to the tandem mobi and notifications are 1000% better. No more notifications for every little thing. I can control everything except for urgent lows. Which, I’d want on anyways.

I’ve been using the FreeStyle Libre system for a while and I wish they had Apple Watch integration. Come on Abbot, get with it!
I am due for a refill of my FreeStyle Libre 3 as well, but I'm tempted to ask my doctor to switch me to try this!

Freestyle Libre has a great product, but their software is way behind. No Apple Watch, no Widget, no Lock Screen, no Apple Health. Annoys me constantly unlocking my phone, finding the app, launching the app just to check what should have been a glance at my watch.

I agree with these critiques, but I set the fast action button on my iPhone to trigger an "Open Libre 3" shortcut which makes it quite a bit faster and less fiddly to check my glucose.

Of course we should be able to get a watch complication or Lock Screen widget, but it's a good workaround.

All the new app does so far is let you know your blood sugar reading. Nothing uploads to the Follow site, or the clairity site from the watch. You have to off load to your phone in order to save the data as before. the sensor stores 24 hours of data, they must be offloaded to a phone or receiver before being lost. If you are using the Follow app, you won't see any values on that app. Those have to be uploaded from the g7 iphone app. All this watch thing does is allows you to go somewhere and leave you phone behind. maybe in the future it will allow it, but for now, just something to keep the phone at home. and of course keep the app on the phone running so when you get by the phone it can upload the data after it gets by the lost signal we allknow and love.

There wasn't any info about the pumps in the release so I was just wondering. Thanks !!

I have to say.
Modern times are awful for a plethora of things, but it's so cool to see these advancements in health management.
In the past you would have only dreamt of a watch keeping most of your important vitals in check. Amazing.
Indeed, well said. My dad was type 1 diabetic and ultimately succumbed to the disease at the young age of 57. That was just 7 years ago and already in that time there have been so many advancements in management and clinical research. If he had this kind of tech available to him when he first got the diagnosis back in the 90's, I think it would've drastically improved his outlook on having to live with it and probably even add years to his life by making it easier to take more preventative action thanks to real-time monitoring of his health. But I take solace in knowing it's as good as it is now and getting better all the time to help alleviate the suffering of the millions of current diabetics that much more.

THis will allow the dexcom sensory to pair with pump, phone, and watch and allow us to use the dexcom complication on the watch with realtime glucose readings! I just installed it and it works great with all 3, including my Tandem pump. Very nice to see this!

Also make sure your Tandem pump up to date. THe last update expanded Tandem compatibility for users to be able to use the G7 sensor and that has been working flawlessly for me.

If you have G7 it should work, it sends multiple bluetooth signals, I use it with the T2 and the phone, and there is a complication on the watch that displays the bg. So I doubt that connecting directly to the watch would disable the pump connection in any way. But the option to connect to the watch directly is available for me yet to test.

This would be great for my 7 year old son who is type 1. He uses the G7 with an iPhone, and it would be great if he didn't have to worry about carrying it around in his pocket at recess, etc. It looks like he would still need to have the phone with him at school for the most part, but with the watch integration, I think he could leave the phone in the classroom/backpack.

Does anyone know yet if the watch alone will give low alerts?

I also wonder if the watch alone would last long enough for the school day if he forgets his phone.

It would also be extremely useful if it had a widget for the iPhone Home Screen!

T1D here. I’m perplexed and frustrated that the watch doesn’t send the 5 minute updates values to the share platform even if you have a cellular model. It would give my family much more comfort if it did the upload
