I am trying to work on this 3g for a friend of mine and its permenently stuck in dfu mode.

Ok first off I have read tons on this subject and can say I have tried everything. While I know this mode is to restore from within iTunes, I have also tried using winpwn, quickpwn, and about 25 othger programs I can list if you like to upgrade, restore, downgrade and make custom ipsws to use in itunes. I tried reinstalling itunes to 7.5, 7.7, and updating again on 3 different machines with 3 different operating systems. Nothing works and the only errors I get are these:

=error 1 for when I select the wrong ipsw not supported by the incorrect device (ie 2g or 3gs for my 3g, etc).
=error 1600 and error 6.
It always error 6's any ipsw that would otherwise normally work in or out of dfu mode.
Now one thing I never see mentioned is the fact that after you put the iphone in dfu itunes always takes it out to do its fuctions eventually in the restore.
Its on dfu from the time its on, reset or otherwise put manually in that function. Itunes will bring it into iboot and restore modes on a restore but it always fails with an error (6).
I checked the logs recently and noticed the same error inside there as well...

entering clear_persistent_boot_args
executing /usr/sbin/nvram boot-args=
nvram: Error setting variable - 'boot-args': (iokit/common) general error
error setting 'boot-args' to '': 1

==== end of device restore output ====
2009-09-07 00:01:46.817 iTunes.exe[5368:152c]: <Restore Device 03A18F90>: Restore failed (result = 6)

Thats in every error 6 and 99% of my problem I have when either restoring and upgrading or restoring with shift+restore and usaing a custom or downgrade.

Ideas??

I assume this is on windows? What version firmware are you trying to restore?

I am using windows and have access to a slew of versions on different machines. same result.
I have tried all 3g firmware by apple and a bunch of custom ones. seems also alot of programs crash when connecting.

Hmm, not sure what else to recommend but trying redsn0w 0.8 with a 3.0 Firmware (make sure you have the 3G not the 3GS firmware), updating iTunes to 8.2.1 and try again?

Do you have a Mac you could try this all on?

I dont have a mac, and redsnow requires restore and its stuck in dfu (blank screen) whenever its on, whethor or not I reset or power off with power and home held down. I dont have the ability to see anything unless its being restored with a program that recognizes dfu mode and can change it.

If it's stuck in DFU mode, just hold the home and sleep buttons for 10 seconds and release both and plug into your computer. Should hopefully bring it back.

the phone never manually goes to restore mode at all, no matter the combination of pressing buttons. ever.
its like locked in dfu and wont restore because maybe something in nvram or other storage is messed up i think. so it never finishes any p[rograms request with a succesful reboot. it has in other programs just shut off but when its back up its still blank screen dfu mode and is verified by checking device drivers/apple mobile device/properties. it says driver (dfu) mode.

I did try this but every program reuiring libusb drivers causes me problems with other usb equipment so i removed that usb driver software.

Just to clarify, are you saying that you removed some USB drivers software from your machine or that you removed iRecovery?

no. the libusb i tried on 2 machines, just to be blunt and it didnt recognise my iphone.

on xp it saw the iphone under test program but not using irecovery. got usb, no ipod/iphone found. but in the test program it was libusb 0002.

go figure. seems everything is a bust lately.

ok on my xp machine i installed libusb again and ran irecovery. I coonnected and performed some norla commands and reset things where they should be but the iphone went oiff by itself. did it all again and i exited and the iphone went off, not reset. its as if no mattewr what I do it remains the same dfu mode crap. itunes always ends in an error 6 no matter the mode it begins in before updating or downgrading. if I could just install it manually maybe someone can tell me how to do so and have it function right maybe even using irecovery. at l;east this program i can see the iphone in a little detail while its connected.

but alas, after reboot command its as if i never typed squat. totally still same situation.
