In full disclosure I’ve been a long time android user for over 10 years. I recently switched to a 12 promax to give it a shot and I think I’m going to stay. One of my biggest gripes though is with the phones dialer. In android I was able to use the keypad to type a name. The more characters I typed the narrower the search got.

Example; I would type “9433” on the phone dialer for ‘Wife’ - her contact would pop up and I could automatically set a default number to call or choose one. Aka T9 for my old school peeps

I have not been able to figure out how to do that or if it’s even possible on the iPhone. Everything I’ve looked at leads me to believe it is not possible.

Short of some third party app that might allow for something like that which you would then need to use to initiate calls, it doesn't seem like iOS support this sort of thing in the Phone app. Apple approach has been basically to use the contacts (address book) and the ability to set and use favorites (all in the Phone app) for this sort of thing.

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately I had come to this conclusion prior to posting but figured I’d ask anyway... bummer

The best alternative I am using is :
- from home screen, swipe down
- start typing a contact

Siri will do a good job at suggesting the best match. Clicking the phone icon will let you select the number of the contact to call.

Is there a way to edit a number in the dialing pad?, like to add a prefix for example or correct a typo?
