Did a clean install of Tiger... No iPhoto or iMovie

When I purchased my Powerbook G4, it had iMovie and iPhoto on it. I did a clean install of tiger, knowing that none of the software that came on my computer would be there.

After I installed tiger, I put in my software restore cd, and it wouldn't let me restore any software. It says "Installation source suddenly not available".

Is there any way to get my iPhoto and iMovie back? I used both on a daily basis.

At least I backed up all my photos and movies I was working on.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you! - Jason

iphoto and imovie are on a the ilife CD, you have to install that CD

I didn't get iLife with my computer. All I got was the iPhoto and iMovie applications.

Or DVD depending on your PowerBook.

iLife comes with a CD for machines without a DVD drive.

If you have a DVD drive you must use the DVD install disc.

Weird, I know. I guess that since most machines come with a DVD now, it cuts down on people "giving" the CD version to a friend.

No I bought it brand new from comp usa on September 10, 2005.

Do you guys think if I did a clean install of panther from the restore cd's that the applications might come back? I guess I could do that and then always upgrade to tiger.

Can't you just chuck the first Panther restore CD in the drive, and click Install Bundled Applications? If not check out Pacifist and grab them that way.

I had a similar situation.

1. Have an iMac G5 that came with Panther & iLife

2. I upgraded to Tiger (did an erase & install)

3. Went to reinstall iLife from the DVDs that came with my iMac and didn't find all the iLife apps (think I found GarageBand & iMovie - can't recall). I may, however, have overlooked it on the original DVDs that came with the machine.

4. I ended-up buying iLife '05 and installed that.

Before you back-date to Panther, you might want to check to make sure the iLife apps are on your Panther/original discs.

Mayhap - I can't really remember when Apple stopped bundling these apps with the OS. I know that our Panther install CDs here at work have them, and in early '04 Apple pulled iLife together. But, I don't recall if Apple started shipping the iLife DVD separate from OS X as an upgrade to the apps that came with Panther in '04. I do know that my Apple, which shipped with Tiger, has a separate installation DVD for iLife '05, although as you say, these apps were already on the system when it arrived.

Isn't there some program that will let you explore CDs/DVDs and just pull out the installation packages for particular apps? I can't recall its name, but maybe someone else here would know. If you use it, maybe you could pull just the installation packages from the Panther CDs and circumvent doing the whole re-install and upgrade.

Yes, that would work, I think. The restore DVD/CDs will let you restore the original OS and applications. If that OS was Panther and you're adding Tiger to the mix, it's not a restore.

I tried inserting the restore cd in the drive, and restoring them via the restore application, however after I selected what I wanted to restore, it said that the source became unavailable.

I used Pacifist, and that did it for me! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I really appreciate it!

You got ripped. Go to them and ask for your iLife disc. Though by now it's probably too late. The diagrams in the front of manuals that say "first check to make sure you have all the contents of this package" are worth obeying.
You could try doing what you just said with panther, then tiger, but what's to stop the same thing happening again?

Wait a minute? You bought a PB 3 months ago and it only had Panther restore CDs? Did it have a drop in Tiger upgrade DVD?

What are the specs on it? Seems to me you got a PB that was more than 5 months old when you bought it "new"

Interesting catch there buddy. Maybe it was one of there outdated display models or something. (CompUSA you never know)

It wasn't a display model, however it is a older model. Yet, it was new in the box.

It's a 15.4" 1.33 g4 powerbook. He said that they were selling it at a discounted price due to the powerbooks just being updated.

I got it for $1,199 versus what is it $1999 for a 1.5 powerbook.

It's not a shady deal, believe me. Everything was disclosed to me before I made the purchase.

Hehe, yeah I wont be needing to do a clean install probably ever again. I actually just did this to get a better understanding of what is involved with the process of reformatting and reinstalling the OS on a Mac. I'm a very technical person so I like to know what's going on behind the scenes. I'm actually going to school for a degree in Information Technology, and have been messing with computers for about 11 years now. That might have something to do with my curiosity, lol.

You know you could simply have tried your clean install on any external Firewire drive. I did that with Tiger before I dared install it over Panther on my iBook.
