when NOBODY clapped when he showed the new iMac? It seems as if good ol Steve is used to people convulsing with excitement when he shows a new product but this time it was kind of...."eh". Personally, I love it, but it just seemed really weird, it was as if I was almost embarrassed for him.

two things: it was a smaller audience, and everybody expected it.

Yeah true, but I don't know, it just kind of felt that Steve though there would have been at least SOME sort of reaction...you know?

Anyways, I've been addicted to this site all day seeing what people have to say about anything in general dealing with the iMac and new apps. Love seeing the opinions that people provide.

Part of the reason for the muted response, I think, is that the audience consisted of members of the press, and they will show restraint. This 'media event' is really an advertisement for new products. Applause after the various software demos was rather muted as well. This is a different audience from that which attends WWDC and Macworld Expo. Those audiences are composed of enthusiasts, developers, technologists, etc. covering a broader demographic, and they as a whole show more emotion.

Also, when you pack a few thousand people into a large auditorium you get a different level of energy than with a couple of hundred in a small intimate setting.

Personally I think the new iMac design is very pleasing. I went to an Apple store to see it in person and it looks outstanding. However, it's not a revolutionary change and does not cause jaws to drop.

These "media events" are always like this. The media people are boring (doing their job I guess), not like in MacWorld where the audience goes crazy with every phrase ol'Steve says.

I have been part of the "media" in the past as a photographer for both the University of Wyoming as well as my city newspaper. As a general rule, you often will find that members of the media will not applaud. This is especially important as sporting events, as the media are not supposed to show favortism. It's not so much that the media are boring...In the case of the Apple event, you have to keep in mind that the press are busy writing, photographing, etc. In addition, although many of the members of the media may have thought that it was the most impressive computer they have seen, there are also issues with members of the media expressing themselves and others seeing it as a representation of the thoughts of the company the media individual represents. It's kind of hard to explain, however.

Long story short....what you witnessed is normal at a media only event.

And, the new iMac is very similar to the previous iMac. There's really nothing there to get excited about.

I noticed this too... I am not a fan of the new design but I would have clapped a little bit. I think it would almost be even more embarrasing of only one person clapped out of the bunch. :D
