Yesterday at WWDC, when SJ was announcing that all the Macs will be shipped with 64 bit Leopard, the slide on the huge screen behind him showed all the Mac computers they are now selling ..... EXCEPT MAC MINI

Now I start to believe that the rumor that mac mini will discontinue by the end of this year might turn out be true.

Ya... you might be right.. could it possibly mean that Mac mini will not have a Core 2 Duo update in the future?

The mini was in another picture at the keynote. So yes, it was left out because it's not 64bit.
If it ever gets updated I'm sure it will get a 64 bit CPU too.

Both reasons make it very possible that the mini may not get upgraded at all and may get discontinued. I don't see way Apple couldn't just combine the features of the Mini and the Apple TV and make an all new product with an all new name.

Because they can make more money in this way. AppleTV will give huge sale boost to their iTune movie store w/ its upcoming movie rental service. As for the mac mini, you would have to buy their more expensive 20" iMacs (assuming 17" iMacs is going to be discontinued too). Putting a dvd-drive or blu-ray drive in AppleTv will significantly affect their online movie sales, since most ppl are willing to watch dvd from it instead of paying $14.99 for a lower quality so-called "HD" movie. I'm a huge fan of apple, but sometimes they are too greedy, more specifically, their marketing dept. is sick.

Yes SJ specificaly said in relationship to Leopard all "64 bit" macs that we sell and left out the only 32 bit MM

I got the vibe that MM wasn't going to get the update...too late for me now... i got a 1 gig ram 1.66 dual today...I can't keep waiting...

The monitor and the acc made it worthwile ..the computer was about $450-$500..
Now if I could only get it to connect!!!(i'm on my PC still)

Hackable Mac

What I think Apple should do is cater to the modders out there and make a Mini that can be easily upgraded and customized by the end-user.

The Mini - which hasn't been upgraded by Apple in a long time - is allowing end users to try stuff like adding the Core 2 Duo processor, RAM, hard drive, etc. on their own.

This kind of behavior has been happening on Windows machines for ages.

The Mini was supposed to be the computer that brought people over from the PC side by allowing them to use their own keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Heck, now show them they can upgrade the processor, hard drive, use a different optical drive, skin or paint the case, dual boot into Windows, etc and you'll win over other converts.

The iMac and the laptops are more closed systems. And the Mac Pro isn't a consumer model that will be modded by the average user.

If Apple drops the Mini in the hopes that the Apple TV will fit the bill, I think they would be making a huge mistake and giving up on the person who might want to play around and soup up a Mac to see what they can do. Or introduce a Windows user into Leopard.
