Did Apple and At&t hold off on iPhone tethering...

... Because of the 3G iPad? It is argued that the iPad was made before the iPhone. Had AT&T allowed tethering from the iPhone, the 3G iPad would be pretty pointless. We got rumored news that the tethering plan for AT&T would be around $30. This happens to be the charge for 3G access unlimited on the iPad.

With the fact that we know that apple knew what they were producing well in advance, and the seemingly close ties that they have with AT&T, it is very safe to assume that tethering was left out to sell 3G ipads.

If that was the cause why only AT&T. Other carriers have tethering enabled. Its more likely that the AT&T is incapable of handling any sort of increased load. Its ludicrous to see a promised feature from last year never be implemented by AT&T

Well the US is Apple's biggest market. There were talks early that apple got a part of subscription revenues. They have a lot invested in AT&T if you think about it. Obviously AT&T can handle the load. The 3g ipad will be a huge tax on their system.

There are a number of countries where tethering isn't supported. Just because AT&T doesn't support it, doesn't mean they can't handle it.

Since they are the biggest around, it makes it easier to pin point on them.
