I purchase and iMac 24" 2.8 Ghz computer (with no upgrades or changes). It is still under the 14 day return policy. My screen looks brighter on the left side, burnt/warm tone in the middle and darker on the right. I didn't even register the computer, I just turn it off. I look at the screen from all different angles and light situations and still can see the problem. I had some other people look at it without even telling them what to look for and they told me exactly what I saw. So, I called the closest Apple store to me (3 hours away) and they told me that they would return it until I told them the part number. They said that all 24" 2.8 computers are custom configurations. I order base model with no upgrades, is that a stock computer? Don't they sell 24" 2.8 Ghz computers at the Apple store?

After researching this issue (on here, google, and on Apple's website), I can't believe how many people have had this problem. I feel that Apple should update and fix this problem! I understand that not all computers come perfect but this is nothing new.

So, what I am asking is, were people able to return their gradient problem computers? I don't want a replacement.

1. You need to setup the monitor in your system preferences panel.
2. Apple has been aware of the problem and if you did software update the problem probably would have fixed with the update.
3. This is a stock computer and you can certainly return it at any Apple Store. (Where did you buy your iMac?)

I have a 24" 2.8 iMac and it is perfect after the updating etc.

I purchased it through Apple.com. They have been really nice over the phone. No complaints, just a faulty computer.

returned

I tried to return my 20'' (within 14 days) that i bought online to an apple store. They said that since it's a custom config, it would have to be returned through the mail.

The iMac i ordered was a basic one and nothing custom so i dont know what they're referring to.

Anyway, the screen gradient is horrendous and I'm waiting for Apple to recognize the problem and replace the screens with higher quality ones before I buy another one.

Also, when i called Apple to return it, they tried to hit me with a 10% restocking fee. I complained that the screen doesnt meet how it's advertised and then they waived it.

Not a happy camper.

Would the update have fixed it? I've heard mostly "no" from most people. I know that it didn't fix mine, although mine is more minor than other people's gradients.

I thought the update only fixed the 2600 pro graphics card causing freezing issue.

How can software fix a gradient issue on a screen. One side it brighter than then other side, how will a software correct that? These are faulty screens and Apple needs to fix this problem. I didn't see this situation with the previous generation 24" iMac with matted screens. Are they going up in quality and value or down?

My 1st 24" had a brightness and yellow gradient. It was purchased at my local Apple store.

Aside from one of the Geniuses trying to tell me he is doing me a favor by not charging me the restocking fee, they took it back after showing a few test screens.

Note: The test screens distributed here were not enough. They wanted to see me create the same effect using supplied Apple apps. The easiest way was to open TextEdit, make it full screen, then open terminal and set the background to black. Then place the terminal window top center and extend it to the bottom of the screen. The gradient should then be quite apparent.

Once I did that, they wanted to compare it to one of their demo units, and the #$@!*! thing had the gradient too. They still exchanged it.
