Did AT&T "Cripple" Newest BlackBerry To Protect iPhone?

I don't buy this for a second. The iPhone doesn't need any "protection" from any other device because it's not like any other device. Consumers aren't going to flock to the 8820. If they were to choose a BB model, it would be the Curve anyway.

Sounds like someone has an ax to grind with Apple and is creating a dumb rumor.

AT&T can enable a feature that lets customers use the GPS for free, or they can disable that and resell another service for $6/$10 month that does the same thing.

Sounds like a typical AT&T move to me.

I know the guys over at BlackBerryForums.com are probably going crazy over this though. heheh

They are. I know Mac fanboys can be pretty bad, but trust me - BlackBerry fanboys are awful. You would think there is no point to living unless you can get an email two seconds after someone sent it to you.

AT&T has no reason to protect the iPhone.

based on a lot of things i've read, AT&T employees don't "encourage" people to buy iphones but some other phones such as the blackberry because they can get a much bigger commission off it

so no reason for AT&T to disable features in other phones, not in their best interest, since they will probably make more money off of a non iphone user

Dumbest story this month.

Lots of carriers cripple their phones' GPS so only their own nav programs will work.

Someone just wants Apple to sound more influential. You can already see that AT&T is continuing with their own 3G phone agenda, bypassing the iPhone with services that only other phones can have.
