Did google just leak the next Nexus?

Huawei is reportedly developing a second-generation Nexus 5 that will arrive before the end of the year and Google may have just leaked it in the promo video for their new Project Fi wireless carrier project. Could this be the Nexus 5 2015?

While it seems impossible that Google would so blatantly reveal an unreleased device in a publicity video (remember how obscure the Nexus 5 was in the last video leak from Google - just go to 0:38), it is odd that Google would not just use the Nexus 6 - the only Android device to currently work with Project Fi - to demonstrate the project.

So while this picture is probably just a generic render for illustration purposes, one has to question why Google would go to the trouble of creating a new product render rather than just use an actual device that exists and that is linked to the project. So, I ask you: could this be the Huawei-built Nexus 5 2015?

The Nexus 5 has been one of the standout devices of the past two years. The Nexus 6 - its acclaimed successor - has not had the same impact.

With Huawei in the driving seat, the Nexus 5 2015 price would likely be similar to that of the original Nexus 5 (which costs 349 USD, while the Nexus 6 comes in at 649 USD).

As for what will be offered in terms of the Nexus 5 2nd generation specs, it's too early to say, but Huawei might be keen to implement its own Kirin technology rather than use a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

Just looks like a render to me. Outline looks kind of like a OnePlus One phone though. Doubt there is much meaning.

Personally, I think Google could just ask LG to reuse the original Nexus 5 body and frame, and just upgrade all the internals. Would keep costs down and sell for $349 outright.

But Google will do whatever. They make almost zero money on the Nexus program, so doubt they give these sort of things much prioritization over other stuff like Project Ara, Tango, Glass, etc...

The Huawei looks like a Samsung, lol. In anycase, ive soured some on the Nexus dvices. I liked my Nexus 5 but the battery wasnt that good and frankly it was too vanilla for me.

Also little things that bothered me were when flying on an airline that had WiFi and things you could connect to, the N5 was never one of the supported phones. Samsungs always were. Also the volume of the ringer was awful and the vibration was very weak.

The camera took pretty decent pictures but it was slow in focusing and taking the pic after you touched the button. Then they came out with the huge Nexus 6. Too big and too pricey for a Nexus device.

Much happier being back with Samsung and a Galaxy S6.

I agree. The Nexus 5 form factor is perfect - fits in pocket, small bezels result in big screen with relatively small case, light weight, decent battery life, reasonable cost for a contract-free unlocked phone.

If they add a bigger battery and better speakers than id be ok with it. I dont get the infactuation with thinness. I have a GS6 and it is thin. With my Spigen case on it, it is perfect now. Id rather have the bigger battery than the thinness. The GS6 ha a 2550 battery . Going to 3000 wouldnt have made much difference in the thickness.

I really wonder how much larger a battery Samsung or apple could put if they made the phone as thick as say their respective cameras. Because even if it were that thick, we know not that entire extra space would be given to the battery. In fact, the extra thickness would only aid the battery where the battery currently is, no? In other words where the battery currently is would get slightly thicker (to the same point as whatever the thickness would reach the cameras' thickness).

How much larger exactly could a battery get given those extra millimeters where the battery would be? Does anyone actually know? Would it be able to go up to anywhere close to 3000 mah?

Increasing the thickness by 1mm of the entire phone and using an in-line, stepped battery like what the new Macbook has, could increase the battery another 1000mah, from 2500 to 3500mah.

Could make sense to partner with huawei and release a cheaper nexus 5. Get stock android in the hands of one of China's big phone suppliers. China - India are undoubtedly where biggest growth is....

The only issue is would google ever be able to sell a nexus phone in China given their services are usually blocked.

Yeah that step battery is pretty cool . I could see apple pioneering this for the iPhone 7.

Sadly HTC can't even make their new M9 look like that - so chances google could make them do it .... not much.
