Did I buy the wrong MBP?

I really liked the idea of getting the 17" MBP with the high-resolution screen, but now that I have it and have played with it, I am wondering, did I get one that is too big? I love this thing, just wondering if it's too much. Someone convince me I made the right choice, lol.
 
I personally think 17" laptops are crazy-huge, but you must have had some want or need for a screen that size or you wouldn't have bought it!

Definitely not portable, though, by my standards anyway. 15" is the absolute maximum I'd be prepared to lug around.

you're not going to find a smaller, lighter 17" laptop. if you're not going to be carrying it everywhere you go, i think it's a fine decision. you've got more pixels and screen real estate in your laptop than i do on my 20" cinema display. so don't fuss about your purchase; you and millions like you should be happy.

that is, unless you do take your laptop with you everywhere you go, lugging it around, trying to find comfortable space for you to work. do you really want to be burdened by all that weight, especially when everyone around you has got smaller and lighter laptops? the sight of a less than 3 lb laptop would make yours feel like a brick! sorry, bub, wrong choice. but of course i'm just kidding! congrats on the purchase.
 
Its definitely not portable, but if you don't mind a workout on the go, then it shouldn't be a problem ;) On a more serious note though, what are you going to be primarily using it for? State the stuff that you will be doing more often and not stuff that you would LIKE to be doing on it as they are 2 completely DIFFERENT things :)

I know it's not a MBP story but similar in thought..

I bought my 24" imac and i seriously thought I had made a major mistake because it was "way too big". Now it looks just right.:)

You will think the same way about your MBP in a couple days! Congrats on your new purchase!

Ditto as long as you got Matte. ;) It's what I want after my 8-Core Stoakley-Seaburg 8 Core Mac Pro.

Yea, but your iMac is for home while his MBP is something he's going to be carrying around ;)
 
The 17" is a great computer with a great screen. It is much lighter any other 17" so it was a good choice!
 
My 17" MBP is only about an inch wider than my Sony Vaio, and the same depth. I'm defintely glad I went with the 17 over the 15, and even more glad that I made the switch.:D
 
Personally, I think you made a horrible decision. You're going to pay the price for a long time.

It's strange, but I think it makes a big difference whether you are sitting with it on your lap or at a desk. The 17" feels pretty large on my lap, no doubt. When I move my desktop keyboard and put it on a desk though, it seems like the perfect size. I think it has everything to do with the extended palmrests to accommodate the extra 1.6" of diagonal screen space. If you're using it at a slightly awkward angle, they can get in the way and make the laptop seem too big. I thought I was a total sucker for buying that Rain Design iLap thing from the Apple site but it actually does a great job of dissipating the heat and putting the computer at a usable angle when it's on your lap.
 
I have no regrets about my 15" Macbook Pro. The 17" ones are okay for a lot of people, but I bought mine to be portable. If the 13" Macbooks had a better graphics card I would have bought one of those instead. :)
 
I personally can't go above 13 after having this macbook. That's just me though. You'll just have to lug around that extra bit.
 
The 17" MBP is actually not THAT much bigger than the 15". It's definitely smaller and lighter than 17" PC laptops I've seen.

I'm happy with my 17" MBP, my only worry is sometimes the fonts are a little small and stressing my eyes (high res version). Hopefully Leopard will fix this
