Hey guys, I recently replaced my Macbook pro 13” early 2015 battery and wanted to ask if this looks like signs of a faulty battery.

Upon installation I fully drained and recharged the battery and capacity showed to be 99%. After a few days (around 5 or 6 cycles), the battery capacity dropped from 99% to 94.6% mid-use while the computer was pretty warm.

On the next charge, my Macbook randomly shut off on its own mid-use again while at 70% charge. Turned it back on and kept using it, no noticeable difference in performance or battery life and didn’t shut off again since then. Now Im going on 9 cycles and according to Coconutbattery and Macbook finder the battery condition is “normal” and still at 94.6% capacity (so far). Manufacturer shows as SMP.

The battery performance itself looks to be fine and I’m getting a decent charge out of it (at least seemingly better than before), however when running apple diagnostics I’m getting the message PPT004 battery needs service. Should I be looking to replace it again? I’m also still on OSX 10.10, and I've done the SMC resets already

Is coconut battery showing designed capacity of that of an original Apple battery? If so and you didn't install a brand new genuine Apple battery, then expect the designed capacity to be different. As long as it discharges and charges normally and hold a good charge, I wouldn't sweat it too much.

As for the error, I could assume not being a genuine battery (if you didn't install one) could be the issue.

I got it off Amazon from a third party seller called "egoway" but the manufacturer shows as SMP which is supposedly the same manufacturer Apple gets their batteries from, I don't know.

It seems to charge and discharge normally so far, other than that random shut down a few days ago (even then it continued working fine).

Is the PPT004 error common with non-apple batteries?

I got a bad battery off of Amazon for a 2008 MacBook and it was apparent immediately. Sent it back and ordered from another seller and have been satisfied enough for a couple of years.

So just as an update, I re-calibrated the MBP and now the capacity is showing 98% which is more what I expected. It runs fine and I'm getting a good charge out of it still and I'm on 11 cycles now.

But I'm still seeing the PPT004 error when running diagnostics. Is it something I should be worried about even though the battery was produced by SMP?

Per the screenshot marcan's thread at twitter.com/marcan42/status/1484155025266180097?lang=en we see PPT004 corresponds to unsealed battery found. Sealed refers to BMS state, they probably reset cycles to zero after installing new cells and didn't retoggle seal bit. I.e. you installed a non-official battery, which is to be expected. Wonder why no one has dumped that entire json, could be very handy
