This is huge if we can use our iDevices as USB storage devices.

I wonder if we can transfer mp3 files directly without the music app, formerly known as iTunes?

Or download mp3 files directly off a website?

If you have app like Documents by Readdle, you can download mp3 directly on iPad from web. But no way how to place it in built-in music app. You have to use iTunes on Mac/PC or download app from App Store which uses its own folder system.

So if I used an app like Readdle, once the mo3 downloads, will it still play directly off iPad or does it have to be transfer to computer first then back to iPad via itunes?

Music file downloaded by Documents by Readdle (free soft) acts like a classic music file - so you can play directly on iPad, including in Readdle’s app. No computer or iTunes needed. You only need iTunes if you want to place music into built-in iOS Music app.

Is this also true for iPadOS or are you speaking about iOS12? Would be very interesting to know if iPadOS allows you an “Open with...” option and select the Music App.

Stupid question: But can you with local storage transfer files between iPad and iPhone using a cable?

I.e my iPhone have plenty of space. I save movies, 4K videos etc on it. Would be sweet to hook up the iPad to it and play it up there. It would be a portable 256gb drive then.

You have to use a Apple Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter to transfer files to Flash drive first. Then use the same to transfer to other device. You cannot directly connect 2 iDevices.

But you can now Airdrop any type of file between 2 iDevices. That would be faster definitely.

"Open with..." is here since iOS 4.3 if I'm right. Apple never allowed "Open with..." support for its iOS music app. I would be glad if Apple creates a full-featured music app with all features from Mac counterpart, but I don't think this will happen.
