I’ve had them for about a year and a half now so I decided to put some alcohol on a q-tip and wipe the AirPods down and now they both crackling very badly. I’m thinking I had too much alcohol on the q-tip maybe, anyone been able to recover their AirPods after something like this?

Happened to me awhile back, but they started working again after leaving them out overnight. Just had to dry out.

It’s been about 24 hours since this happened, hopefully they dry out because I already contacted Apple and I know they will probably charge me since I’m out of warranty.

Some forms of alcohol can dissolve glue and the APP have a lot of it inside to fix some components. This could be a reason for your problems if there was indeed too much of it. Also, there are MEMS microphones beneath some of the grills / openings on the APP. Apple's recommendations is to use a small amount of diluted isopropyl alcohol on the surface only and avoid the meshes / holes. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208729
