Did I Make a wise choice?

Just looking for a little perspective.

I Have currently a Macbook Pro 2.0 Ghz 2 gig of ram and 256 MB Radeon along with a Dual 2 Powermac G5 2 gig of ram and a 256 MB Radeon 9800.

I also have an oldish pc (P4 2.66 @ 3.0 Ghz etc..)

Connected to my G5 I have a 23" ADC and a 15" LCD.

With the new Mac Pros I figured my resale value for my G5 would fall fast and being my laptop is neck and neck with my desktop I unloaded my G5.

I'm going to stick with my laptop, an external enclosure for a 320 gig data drive and the money I got for the G5 I've bascially done an even exchange for a refurb 30" ACD.

My wife will use the 23" ACD with her Mac Mini for now.

I'm drooling over the Mac Pros but I'm trying to hold off until around April for a few reasons:

1.) Will have 10.5 preinstalled
2.) Possibly speed bumped machines or 8 core machines
3.) Chance to save up some + Tax return
4.) Not revision A or revision A Bugs worked out (I had my logic board swapped for revision A Macbook whining it's finally perfect).

I can also shove the ol' PC in the closet and use bootcamp now off an external drive..

Thoughts?

It seems that you're in no need of a mac pro right now so I'd wait it out till those almost-mythical eight cores come out. If you do feel you need it now, just buy it. The mac pro's seem to be great machines and should last you a good amount.

One more thing, you're very lucky to have your pick of the mac litter. Good luck with your purchase!

No offense meant or anything, but why exactly would anyone but servers need eight processors? I can have all the apps open on my computer and because of RAM not have any slowdown, so why?

Video editing. 1080i video editing and esp 1080p video editing will eat those cores right up and then some.

Ok, first of all, the Mac Pro does not come with 10.5 preinstalled. That's only if you are a developer.

Second, as said, your MacBook Pro sounds like a very capable, speedy machine. I think you would be okay with sticking to your MacBook Pro for now. Why waste the money on a second machine? Then you'll end up neglecting one of the two and you won't really get your money's worth. Just my opinion.

8 cores? I think its going to be alonger wait than next april.

But if you dont need a machine right now then waiting for tax refund and leopard sounds good. Your macbook pro will keep you good until at least then and they will have at least boosted the mghz by april for mac pros.

And yea G5 prices in the last 2months on ebay have been slowly going down, so it sounds like you made a good call.

I know 10.5 isn't coming preinstalled now, but it will, most likely, by April.

I guess it was the wise choice. I've just never had a laptop as a primary computer where I've had to dock it. I've always had the big hulking tower so it's going to just be different.

The 30" display will be killer for video & graphics editing.

As to the 8 cores, if Intel keeps on track those chips should be due by early 2007. Now that Apple is using Intel, they have to keep up with the Dells of the world so it won't shock me to see more frequent product updates.

Why do I need 8 cores? Well, it's simple. I buy the fastest computer I can afford, and I don't need the tower this moment. If Apple is offering an 8 core Mac Pro and it's in my budget I'm certainly not going to say 'no thanks'. I work in the IT industry, I love technology and I guess it goes back to the LAN party days where we all overclocked & tried to best eachother on framerates. We're geeks but we're still guys. (No offense to you ladies out there) Faster cars, faster computers, etc etc.

Besides, imagine how snappy Finder will feel!
