I posted this nearly 3 years ago regarding the Archos 705 asking Is This The Future of Handhelds?

I said "My crystal ball says Apple will eventually come out with a device similar to this."

"I don't see tablets or or other mid-sized devices ever really taking off."

"in a year or two when no one remember those devices and the iPhones is still devouring market share at a rapid rate."

Did the OP predict the iPad? No. The iPad has been in development since 2002 at least. The closest guess as to what the actual iPad was posted by a clever prognosticator in March of 2009. Not too far from the actual specs, with the key idea being to support iPhone apps and scale them to fit the larger screen.

Do a forum search for "iPad" and you can find references going back to 2002 or maybe earlier.

4D expects and welcomes alternative opinions. Pile them on. ;)

Yeah, the way I understand it is that this has always been about the iPad. iPhone was born out of the iPad project. Now technology has caught up enough that they could release a quality, affordable product. That's the primary reason there are so many similarities between the two devices. iPhone is a tiny iPad. Future OS and hardware updates will further differentiate the two products. That much is certain.
