Did Jobs get a deal on glossy screens?

I was so excited when i heard the new iBook replacments were coming out soon. Then when they were released and i noticed they only came in glossy screens, i was dumb founded. Ive been to the apple store many times trying to convince myself the glossy screen is not that bad. Although, with no success.

What was jobs thinking? Im sure if there was a world wide poll conducted it would show that 70 percent of the population is in favor of matte screens and 30% in favor of glossy. To me, glossy makes a computer look cheep.

Do you think they will eventually change it or give us the option?

i have a sony vaio with a glossy screen and it does a grand job of making win xp look as best it can ( just don't try and use the machine or it will crash)

so i like the idea of glossy screens on macbooks

I agree, I went to the Apple store yesterday and was looking at the macbooks and decided I really don't like the glossy screen. It makes the computer look cheap to me as well and just standing in front of the computer at the store their was a glare on the screen that obstructed my view. I admit that the glossy screen does bring out colors well but I'm still much more in favor of the matte screen.

don't get the glossy screen if you suffer headaches that can be brought on or made worse from reflected light.

Considering Steve Jobs himself was the man who said "once you add something to a product, you cant remove it."

There should be an option, but that would cause problems with manufacturing of different types through speculation of the consumers demand.

can you remove dedicate graphics from macbook? they did.

Glossy all the way! All these babies keep whining about reflection and stuff. As soon as you have your MacBook/MBP with glossy screen, you'll be glad you have it. It shows the colors 10 times better, and there's only a reflection when the screen's turned off (at what point you don't look at it).

Jobs upgraded the proccesor in the MBP just a few weeks in. Maybe he will have a change of heart with the MB as well and give us the option for a matte screen.

I know i would have purchased a MB on my first visit if it had a matte screen.

I've been workin' on a MBP 17" with a glossy screen, and I must say I dig it. Things just look better. Choice, however, is where it's at - to each his/her own.

I would like to say I've owned Macs since the old MacClassic and this is the best one to date!

My boss has an HP laptop with a glossy screen and everytime Im called into fix it (ever since the introduction of the MB anyway) i look at it from anyway I can to try and get a terrible glare or reflection...

...I've failed to see a problem every single time. I have a feeling my next Mac purchase will have a glossy screen, whether its an option or not.

Glossy screens seem to be the fad these days.

Personally, I don't like them. Most of my friends who have them explain how good videos look. That's fine, but I use my computer for e-mail, browsing, etc. that is character based and IMHO, glossy sux!

I've seen the new MacBooks and don't like the glossy screen. So I doubt that I will be buying one anytime soon.

The glossy on the MacBooks is far less reflective than similar implementations from other PC makers. I've had mine since release day and have used it in all kinds of lighting situations, and the only time reflections are even an issue is when you're looking at a black screen and have a very strong backlight.

For comparison, it's considerably less prone to glare and reflections then a CRT.

I really like the glossy screen on the MacBook, more than any other glossy screen I've seen before.

In fact, last night in my MBA class, I brought my new MacBook and was using it. I had no less than six people (!) come up and wonder at the new MacBook, asking how much, what does it do, marveling at the quality of the display, etc. It was really strange! (The class only has 18 people in it.)

So, based on purely anecdotal evidence it sounds like you're in the minority. You can always get a MBP with the matte screen, though.

So did I... (to Birmingham Apple Store) the people there said that you can get it gloss-free online, though you might have to call them up or something, definitely ask about it and they should be able to get you one gloss-free, as I agree the MBP's screens look better than the MacBooks...

They may look "cheap" to you because you've seen too many Windbloze machines?

You could always do what they do in the film business, soap up the shiny surface to cut down on glare. Or, you could take a 0000 steel wool pad to your screen.

Just kiddin. I don't have one but if it was something that prevented me from working, I would be nutso. I did hear you could order a matte screen, tho.

It wasn't really under Job's control considering how horrible Motorola is. They couldn't deliver ENOUGH 500 mhz chips so they had to go with the slower chip so they can sell more Macs and meet demand.

Its got to do with both looks and functionality. First of all, like i said along with many other ppl, it looks cheap. Secondly, if you need to use the computer in an office with bright over head lights, or in a room with windows, you get alot of glare and it makes the screen difficult to see.

Also, a very valid point some ppl have made is that the extensive glare causes eye strain and in turn headaches. Especially with ppl who are prone to them.(Like me)

The point im trying to make is: Wouldnt it make more sense if there was an option for either matte or glossy. It would satisfy a larger demographic and in turn create more sales.

Essentially, it would put more pennies in Jobs piggy bank.

I'm not ardently anti-glossy (would prefer matte), but people crowing about how much 'better' colors are and so on are, uh, missing the point.

Hopped-up contrast, more saturated colors, etc. aren't 'ten times better' they're different. If you work or play in any kind of design or photographic capacity, a 'dull' matte LCD may show you a truer rendition of what you're working on (ie my matte 20" ACD is SWOP-certified - MacBook screens ain't).

I wish I could see a MacBook calibrated with an EyeOne or Spyder Pro before I bought in.
