Hi, I'm in desperate need of help. My new imac G5 just suppenly stopped. I restarted my computer like any other time and when i turned it back on, it comes up with a grey screen with a icon of a blue world, now it just switched to a folder that flashes the little "Finder Face" icon then a question mark "?".

Now after 5 mins it starts up....

Can someone help me, is this the equivilent of windows blue screen of death?!?!

Thank you.

I have never heard of that blue screen coming up. However, the Finder with a "?" means that your root folder cannot be found. Which equals very bad.

Insert your hardware cd and run the tests. Come back later after you do that.

It seems to be working fine now, thank you for your help. The only thing is that my startup sound (that duuuuun) seems to be WAY too loud. Louder that it was before, any info on that?

Thanks :)

Hold down "cmd option O F" and type "mac-boot" when the promt comes up. If that works, then, as soon as it boots up, go to systemprefs:startupdisk, select the 10.4 folder, and click restart. It should fix Open Firmware (I had that problem when installing Tiger on the Cube - had to install it via FireWire Target Disk)

See if this helps at all...

To find out if you have an incompatible login item:
Shut down your computer and wait 30 seconds.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences.
Click Accounts, then click Login Items.
Make a list of the login items--you'll need to remember them later.
Select all of the login items and click Remove.
Choose Apple menu > Restart.
If this solves the problem, open Accounts preferences again and add the login items one at a time, restarting your computer after adding each one, until the symptom occurs again. (You can start up your computer normally when you're adding the login items.) When you've found the incompatible login item, use the procedure above to remove just the problem item.
