Did the (PRODUCT)RED Sport Band change colour?

Not sure if this has been noted before, but wondering if the Product Red SB has changed colour, or Apple have just changed their renderings on their website.

Here's a before and after:

They have done this once before with the Blue Sport Band, and this is definitely the Product Red, not the new 'Rose Red'. It's also available to pickup at stores at a later date than the bands which were previously available such as Midnight Blue.

Would be interested if anyone could compare if any Apple Store has them in nearby?

Seems so. Just checked the web archive, the model number of the Product Red Sport Band changed on Sept 12, so something’s different for sure. Maybe they did it to match the color of the Ruby Product Red Classic Buckle, those two colors look similar.

Also, they have done this with the Blue Sport Band before, there were two of them with the same name, the newer one had a lighter color.

That's a relatively old thread and the consensus was 'Dragon Red' was just an internal name/one used in some markets. This looks like an actual change to the product.

That's what I thought, though they did label the new blue band as 'New' when it was released - no such label here.

That thread is less than two months 'old.' But you also stated. The Red Band I have seen is NOT the Product Red.

Yep, when I bought the Product Red SB in the first week it was released, my receipt showed it as 'Dragon Red'. It's just a different name for the same product.

Unless you were suggesting to simple move any discussion of the red SB to that thread, in which case fair enough but I hadn't seen this potential change mentioned anywhere else so thought it warranted a new discussion

Short answer to the OP: yes! Original on the left, new one on the right. The new one is quite a bit darker, which I like better.

any chance of a comparison in better lighting? i used DCM on my mac to check the color values of the bottom pieces and they're almost the same. the older one is also visibly curved, which means it is picking up the lighting in a different way to the flat new one. they really don't look that different.

Of course the older one is a little curved, I've worn it many times. But I think in the upper part of the pIcture the difference is pretty obvious and close to the difference IRL.

Of course the older one is a little curved, I've worn it many times. But I think in the upper part of the pIcture the difference is pretty obvious and close to the difference IRL.

the point i'm making is, in ⅔ of the photo the colours look identical and in the ⅓ where there is a difference, the lighting will be completely different because of the curve of the older one. would be nice to have a better lit/positioned comparison photo if you could.

Actually, in the upper part the lighting is not different and hence the difference is visible. In the lower part the lighting is different because the curvature throws some shadow on the lower part of the old band, making it look darker there than it is. But I'll see what I can do for you.

if the curvature can throw a shadow on the lower part, that must mean the light is coming from the side rather than top down. that means it will be hitting parts of the curved bit straight on, while the "flat" piece will be reflecting the light in a different way. i just did an experiment with two identical m/l midnight blue bands where i laid one curved over my airpod case, one flat and used a torchlight to simulate light coming from perpendicular to the top of the case. it wasn't enough to make as big a difference as your photo shows, but I could see a colour tone difference between the two. i don't know if a camera would've exaggerated or not, or if it's more or less pronounced because it is artificial light... but hey, the lighting does make a huge difference to it.

Heh. I think the marketing pic on the first post of this thread does a good job of showing the difference.

I have the original Product Red band as well - while I like how it "pops" for being a bright colour, the hue of Red is almost orange. (also matches the Apple soft cases for the phones) - someone should check if that's also received a darker update.

I might just have to wander into the Apple store and grab one of these actual Red bands.

While the difference in the Apple renders in the OP is much bigger than IRL, it's true that the old red is more orange-y than the new one.

The original red sports band was a brighter/tend to be a little more orange shade of red. I actually compared it to the Coke red logo and it was very similar. The new shade is definitely darker.

Thats wonderful, except for the fact that this one is still called product red, and the part number is different for the new one (MQXE2FE/A) you didn't buy the one they released this week.

I don't think anyone accused you of lying about the name - 'Dragon Red', however, was simply the internal name Apple used for the Product Red band. It was not in any way, shape or form different from the Product Red band - because it was the same thing.

This new band (post-Tuesday) has a different model number and a different shade as shown by the future's post. It is highly possible that this new band is still internally known as 'Dragon Red'.

Does anyone know what the serial/model number is for the second generation red? I see that the 40mm is MU9M2AM/A. But what about the second gen 38mm? Trying to scout one on eBay and to get it for cheap but I think most of them are first gen.
