Did they ditch Newsstand or just add News?

it took a few releases, but I heard Newsstand was gone. Is that true? It finally works well.

I have a few things in there: New York Times, Wired, National Geographic and a handful of others. Auto downloading finally works. Will it be gone?

It's nice for the plane to not have to rely on connected sources.

Dear Lord I hope so. One less app that will need to be banished to my junk folder.

I know not everyone uses stock apps, but that doesn't mean no one does.

Newsstand is replaced with a folder called 'Newsstand' with the individual apps inside, in the iOS 9 beta anyway. Each publication (e.g. I had The Times and Wired) just appears as another app, and new ones can be downloaded from the App Store.

Not really a major change, but means you can't have it within another folder (although you can get rid of it entirely). Things might change when their News app launches, as it's no present on the current beta.

Hopefully the major change is not looking at incredibly fugly design of Newsstand. Big horsey gradated bars? I'm convinced that was designed by a low level intern and wouldn't have made it through a sophomore design critique. Good riddance!

I don't have a problem with stock apps. I use mail, stocks, Safari, and reminders just off the top of my head. And even though I don't use weather and maps, for example, I don't hate them because they do serve a purpose and at least have some utility.

Newsstand, on the other hand, is worse than useless in my opinion. Not only does it do nothing beyond what a folder can do, it has a pretty homely icon and you're forced to use it.

When it first came out, I had a subscription to WSJ. I liked it's icon and it occupied prime real estate on my home screen. Then newsstand comes out and my WSJ icon gets hamfisted into this goofy looking app and that's the only way I can access it.

So yeah, I'm a little salty about newsstand and I will dance at its funeral. Good riddance.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't read completely through your first post and I probably came off as a little insensitive. I actually didn't know that Apple had finally gotten around to making it sort of useful.

Yes ....they ditched Newsstand completely for an app called News which only delivers relevant contents of interest

Surely they are totally different types of app though. Newsstand allows you to purchase and view full digital versions of individual magazine and news publications. The new news app is a container for content/articles pulled from various sourced. I can imagine a lot of people who have magazine subscriptions would still want newsstand in place.

Honestly they should have kept newsstand but made it an exclusive iPad app similar to Photo Booth. Both magazines are read on iPad anyways as some have suggested. Its actually sorta nice when you're own a flight or some other place to be able to just browse your downloaded magazines without any restrictions.

I hope the News app will allow us to pre-download content if we wish, instead of just downloading it whenever the app is opened. That would be nice for flights.

I don't use Newsstand but I think it'd make more sense to have a section inside the News apps for Magazines, let's see what happens in later betas.

I just hope News lets me add a webpage for reading like Flipboard does; that's the killer feature for me, having a full site as a magazine.

Totally agree with all of this. Adding our own webpages and blogs would be the killer feature for me too.

So why does this need to be there: "Apple is partnering with several content providers like The New York Times to offer content for news". The Times is such a ugly news source and is blatantly left leaning. Why does Apple feel compelled to post their crap and promote it upon installation?
