This is quite confusing and I really wish Apple would somehow clear this up to make it easier to understand. But there's 2 ways to setup bedtime mode. You can either do it through settings or through the clocks.app.

Doing it through the clocks.app will give you more features, such as setting the days you want it on/off, and being able to set a special alarm sound that slowly gets louder as it plays. Will automatically notify you when you need to go to bed.

But if you enable bedtime mode under settings, you get none of these features. It just simply turns on or off depending on the schedule time range that you have defined but DND mode.

Most people won’t need both. Everyone is different with different patterns so it’s good they’re separate options.

Here’s a personal example. I don’t need a bedtime alarm. I don’t need to be reminded when I need to go to bed, etc. Therefore I leave that Clock feature off.

But under DND settings I have a way of saying that my scheduled DND period is my bed time in order to get the bedtime DND features. This means the screen is dim and notifications are hidden. It’s DND but enhanced for bedtime (some DND may not be at bedtime). The option here is nothing to do with alarms.

Someone who uses the Bedtime alarm has the option to add DND to their custom bedtime pattern. They can still also have an additional scheduled DND block - separate to their bedtimes, e.g. daily meeting - which they can configure in the DND settings outside of Clock. They wouldn’t need to enabled ‘Bedtime’ on that.

These are just some examples, hope that’s clear.

In summary, there is a special DND+Bedtime combination which means the screen is dimmed and notifications are hidden. This can be enabled in two different places for slightly different purposes.
