difference between dvi - dvi and dvi -vga?

hi,

i have the dell 2407 and a new mac mini.

is there a difference between connecting to the vga port on the monitor through the adapter or going straight dvi to dvi. obviously the later is simplier, but then perhaps i could "save" the dvi for hdtv. I have connected it to both, but i cant see the images next to one antoher quickly. if there is a difference, i dont find it overly dramatic. to me, the straight dvi looks sharper, but this could just be me. the resolution 1900x1200 is the same.

Hey I hate to answer a question with a question, but is the resolution REALLY 1920x1200 on both types of connections? I've been looking into getting a Dell 24" (2405 or 2407) for my Mini for awhile now, but I have been told that through VGA, it can only muster a 1920x1080 signal. Can you verify the resolutions really are the same both ways?

Anyway, you are probably right about the DVI being sharper. I also know from personal experience that on the older Minis, the VGA connections tend to look more "washed out" than DVI. I don't know if they've fixed this on the new Intels.

DVI will be the best way to hook up the monitor. LCD monitors are digital by design and as such, using the analogue VGA connection requires a number of conversions from digital to analogue which degrades the quality somewhat. You are correct in saying that the DVI provides much sharper images.

DVI is far superior to VGA when connected to LCD monitors.

DVI is a digital signal to a display for some sort, so there is no quality loss. VGA is an analog signal. For a digital signal to convert to an analog signal it goes through a converter (i.e. coverting a dvi to vga is digital to analog). When that happens there is a quality loss in the signal because you cannot reproduce bit for bit quality in an analog signal.

yes, i can confirm it, i can do 1920 x 1200 on VGA, there is the option for both.

i now have both my power book and mini attached, on on vga and the other on dvi. again, i think i can detect a difference with the dvi, but it is really slight. the 1920x1200 on vga looks stunning (other resolutions not so much). the closest thing to a definite difference is the background (wall paper) on the dvi looks ever so smoother.

i love this. truly amazing. if you are thinking of getting one, do it.

DVI is far better, vga sort of maps an analog picture over the pixels, DVI will send a digital signal to set each pixel exactly.
