Hi,

Just curious, if there really a big difference between the Radeon 6750M & 6770M performances in the 21.5" iMacs?

Previously I was using the 21.5" i3 iMac, with 256Mb Radeon 4670. Completed Crysis 2 & Portal 2 on Boot Camp. Resolution was decent at medium settings with no lag. AA & AF all turned off.

I know that I'm not getting the best resolutions but neither am i getting the worst. In the 1st place, expectations have to be lowered since I was using the lowest-end iMac for gaming.

Kinda glad (and lucky i guess) i sold off my 2010 21.5" iMac bout 1 month back. The newly revised specs & pricing are a huge welcome.

I doubt there would be a huge difference, but if you are looking for numbers, the high end 15" MBP has the 6750M in it and there are lots of benchmark numbers for it floating around the 'net. That should give you at least a baseline of what to expect from the 6750m and if that is "good enough" for you, then I would roll with that.

Just my .02 worth.

P.S. Yes I realize that they utilize different processors, and other factors can cause the benchmark numbers to vary, but it is a good baseline for what to expect in the iMac.

Thanks dude. Will go check. Did not realise bout the MBP.

Anybody has gotten the 21.5 with the 6750M base model yet? Just wanna hear bout the feedback from gaming.

There are lots of reviews on the 27" with the 6970 card, guess its taking advantage of the high-end specs for gaming.

I don´t know if should go for the base or top 21.5 model yet. I will mostly use it for Ps and Ai.
My almost 4 year old gaming pc died last month and have decided not to get a new one. I didn't use it very much so I could use the iMac for that too.
How would the 6750/6770m compare to Nvidia 9600gt that I had in the PC?

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 4: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

The 6750 and 6770 would be better than the 9600gt.

Just sold a 2011 Macbook Pro 2.2 with the 6750 and picked up a 2011 21.5 base Imac. No difference in gaming at all that I can see. FPS are consistent across the board with L4D2 and Wow. Plays everything on high settings beautifully. Not using bootcamp. Just running OSX games. Just couldn't justify the extra spent on the MBP and having it ultimately sit on my desk as a desktop. Imac ended up being the perfect mix of cost and performance. About to begin playing StarCraft2. I can honestly say that other than slower Handbrake encodes, the Imac is every bit as capable as the MBP was.

Handbrake is slower on an iMac than MBP? I've got a lot of thinking to do now....

The iMac has a Core i5 processor without hyperthreading. The MBP has a Core i7 processor with hyperthreading, although the clockspeed is slightly slower. That could be making the difference.

ALL cross platform games will now run fairly easily on modern desktop equipment, I'm talking PC and Mac, why ? Because most cross platform games are mainly CPU intensive as they are written with console as the limiting factor. So we are talking about, in the case of the xbox 6 year old hardware.

Until games companies go back to writing desktop exclusive games, which isn't going to happen, all desktops will have plenty of horse power to cope with ****** dx9 bound graphics. Well until gen3 consoles arrive.

Why? Do you spend 8 hours a day ripping movies?

Either card is way more than enough for PS or AI.

still dont understand why gaming numbers are "do or die" unless gaming is your profession and you plan on spending 10 hours a day gaming.
While I do enjoy benchmarks, how about a game where you are not breaking 300 FPS?

Games are GPU limited currently. You can get a quad core processor for under $100 and even a Core i3 is more than enough.

After Apple managed to screw up my BTO top-of-the-heap 27 with a yellow screen I've gone the other way and got the entry 21.5. Doing the setup now, if no one else has got anything up by tomorrow and I get some time I'll try and get a couple of Steam games running and give some feedback for ya.

Well it was very important to me because I had over 600 dvd's to rip to an external drive. I would rip 15 or so at a time and let them encode overnight. The MBP and its i7 would eat them up at an amazing pace. That said the i5 is no slouch and handles them very well too, just not nearly as fast as the i7. Of course at the end of the day when all of my dvd's are ripped I will gain nothing from an i7 over an i5 because I do nothing requiring that power at all. The base iMac will handle most any game at very good settings. If you are an FPS pig however, it will prob leave you wanting. Not sure even the 2gb 6970 will meet those needs of the FPS hungry. I agree that I still can't understand the iMac as a gaming rig questions. It simply isn't nor has it ever been.

Nope, current gpu's eat console games for breakfast. Console based games have to be designed to be CPU specific as they have to ge processed by the three core CPU which the xbox runs on.
Think I have a dx11 gpu but nearly all cross platform games are dx9. Crysis 2 or example.

I am really sure the quad core paid off here.

Which points to the fact that games are written or several year old hardware. Console processing is mainly done in CPU, the GPU chip in console is mainly just or output not for rendering. Which is why it's CPU bound. As I said any modern desktop will eat most modern games.

There are plenty of PC games that are not console ports. GPUs matter. If that wasn't the case there wouldn't be all that whining over the intel gpu on the MBP 13 or the Sony f series nvidia 310. CPUs matter but for many PC games gpu is king.

Cheers,

Just to join the crowd, I would also love some benchmarks on gaming on the base 21.5''.

Thanks!

I'd lOve to have this too - looking at the higher end 21.5 with the i7 just to future proof. Anyone tried sc2 on the i5/i7 yet? Any differences in performance to be aware of?

I guess previously nobody would associate an iMac w gaming capabilities. But tides have changed w the new 6000series GPU onboard.

Hurray.
