Difference between Trail > Single > Family account levels?

I'm on my 60day trial of MobileMe and wondering about the exact and detailed differences to expect once I activate the account. It appears that Outlook syncing doesn't work in the trial, but I'm wondering what else will be added after activation. I've been reading about email aliases and such and curious if they are included in the single user account.

Also, what are the specific differences when you upgrade to a family account type? I see you get 4 more email addresses (assuming .me type only), and 5gb storage for each account. If you only have 2 people using the account is it possible to pool that extra 20gb somehow?

I wan't to configure pop/imap email addresses that don't use simple duplicate fowarding of our exisiting pop mail to the .me address, but not sure if I need the family account to do this. The fact the trail version is crippled makes it really hard to figure out how everything works without paying for a year's service. Thanks.

No. Outlook Syncing does work during the 60 day trial. I am still on the trial.

With an individual account you get 5 aliases -- you can have different names in the "from" field, but all mail delivered goes to your inbox. (but you can set a "rule" or "filtering" in your mail app for this)
MobileMe will check mail from one POP account, but this is only on the web app, and you have to click to do it, so it won't turn a different account into "push" if that's what you're looking for -- for that you'd have to forward from your other account. A family account wouldn't change that.
You can't have the other 4 accounts "share" the 20 Gigs. So if one person uses the main account and the other the other four accounts, the one with four accounts could use one for email, and the others for iDisk and photo galleries. But they wouldn't be able to access all at once on web, they'd have to log out and in. If they're using iDisk as back-up, that wouldn't be a problem, but might be a pain if they're trying to access files that way on a daily basis. (I'm pretty sure that the sub accounts get 5 aliases each, but haven't checked that)

Allow emails to my POP address when replied to automatically labled with my POP email as the "From" address? In other words, I want to use MobileMe to manage my .me and my main pop account behind the scenes, but not force all my outgoing mails to be labled as sent from the .me address.

Is there any trick using fwding from my pop account to mobileme to have those emails that were fwded to be replied to using my pop email as the "from" address?

A little confused about your questions. Email sent to userid@me.com is placed into the MobileMe Cloud (or Server Storage). That email will be Push to all email clients that need it (MobileMe Web Client, iPhone, Outlook and many other IMAP Clients).

Your other POP Email accounts can be forwarded to your userid@me.com (I recommend this if you can). Or you can have MobileMe Pull other email into the MobileMe Cloud (which then is available to your other email clients as described above), see MobileMe Email Preferences "Check mail from an external POP account".

As far as "from" email. There are a couple of ways of doing this which is documented a number of times in other posts.

As far as being crippled for the 60 day trial. Not sure what does not work. Your comment about Outlook Sync is not true. Thanks for the reply and info. As far as differences between trial and full version, it looks like aliases are the only thing that doesn't work. I'm still trying to find a way to force any new emails or replies composed in both .me webmail or on the iphone to use my POP address as the "from" by default. You say this has been covered in other threads and I'm digging. Do you have any links to such discussions?

Do a search on SMTP or From Address.

This would be for iPhone ONLY - not MobileMe Web Page New Mail (I think most people use a mail client like Outlook and not the Web Page). I do not think you can do this on MobileMe like you can with say Yahoo or Gmail.

For the iPhone:
The main setup to remember is you have to set the SMTP Address to your SMTP Server (in mail setup). Some say that Gmail seems to support this the best. When you point to your SMTP for your POP Account you can set the From Address there. I believe you can do this with only 1 account but I don't do it that way, read below.

For me I have to have multiple From Address (example: support@mycompany.com or sales@mycompany.com) so I have created DUMMY "Other" POP Accounts where Fetch is set to Manual and the Incomming mail is disabled (by bad userid or something). So when I send email it allows me to select "from" which account the mail is sent from. So I then chose "Support" and the mail looks as if it came from "support@mydomain.com).

Are you a MAC User? I believe this feature only works on the mac. Since I am on Windows I don't know if it is not working because I am Windows or not.

I made another change to my settings. After the SMTP Outgoing Account is setup you can then Edit and just Remove the Inbox setting (Host Name, User Name, Password).

Also, you might want to make your "Default Account" be this Outgoing Account so that all New Email defaults to be From this Account. Then you only have to change the From when doing Reply's.

You have to already own a domain to use the "personal domain" in MM. All it really does is allow you to use iWeb/iLive 08' to post to your domain.

Yes. under Settings / Mail .... / Default Account (under Signature)

So I did all this as the way I think you described and the best I get is the option to CHOOSE the outgoing "from" address when i compose or reply. However, xxxx@me.com is still the default "from" address with both new and reply emails. Did I do something wrong?

I just tested again and I was wrong regarding New Mail. The Default Account must be for something else. It appears that the "From" for New Email is the "last" from you used. That would be how I got confused.

Reply Mail always starts with the From of what InBox you are in (which would be userid@me.com). This is how I understood this before where you have to select the correct "From address."

Here is another option for New Mail.

On the Mail / Accounts Page where you see ALL of you Mail Accounts.

I see:

userid@me.com
support@mydomain.com
sales@mydomain.com

Which ever one you select and then press the New Mail Icon (lower right) that will be the From Address.

The problem with this (if you feel this is a problem) is that the "Sent" Mail stays in that Accounts Sent Folder. Might be nice for it to go somewhere else.

For me this is not a big problem. With Outlook I have to also change the From Address all the time because I have a number of From Address (sales, support or me etc.). But with Outlook you get "on behalf of;" in the from address and with this technique on the iPhone you do not.

For others that only have 1 From Address (other then me.com) I can see this to be a hassel. But of course it depends on how often you send mail from the iPhone. Others also need to do this on the MobileMe Web Client which is not available (unlike with other web clients like Yahoo, Google etc). However, in my case if I am on my computer I would just use Outlook and not the Web Client.
