Difference Between Vanilla and Server Models?

I'm considering buying a Mac Mini to hold me over until the new iMac comes out.

I figure that once I get the iMac, I can convert the mini into a media device.

My question is - what's the difference between the normal model and the server model? Is there any reason why a home user would need the server model?

If you plan on running a domain controlled network at home, then you would need the server version. If not, the normal version is all you need.

forgetting the actual server program. the 2011 server has the fastest cpu by far. so if you plan on pushing your cpu with multi core programs you want the server. if you use hand brake a lot the 2011 mac mini server is very good.

Typically, you'll find this in a business setting. For instance, I manage at work a network of 100 PC's and about 7 servers. I have a primary domain controller and a backup domain controller. The DC helps manage my users profiles as they roam from PC to PC each day. The DC also helps sync files across the network, and serves as my network's DNS server.

you the owner use the server model.

your employees use the lower priced base minis.

all really heavy duty cpu use can be done on the server.

keeping the lessor mini free for other work.
