Difference in Routers

Hello, I have a question about my router that I got with my DSL service. Would getting a Linksys or another model be better off? Why is that a friend has read that the ones that come for free with the service sometimes can hold back performance and that getting one with higher specs. can improve speed.
So is this true or does it very by companies and the routers they give out?
If it helps I have Verizon DSL with a Westel (think thats the spelling) router that they gave me. Thanks for any input

Ain't true that with a different router you'll get better speed, i wok for a DSL company and i set up router the hole day, the speed is giving from the central office. If you have a westell modem and you get a router, you'll need to change the westell setting and put it as a brigde mode in order to make it work correctly with the router.

A router will NOT inprove the actual DSL speed. The only major difference is the speed of the actual wireless connection (11, 54, 108)

Technically, you could limit the speed of the router. But it could just as easily be done in the modem itself so another router wouldn't help. I think they do it in the Central Office though. No way to get around that.

Hi, thanks for the help found a problem with my line now everything is better...well it seems better anyway. Also found a link to test my speeds with so that helped out as well.
