Differences between early 2008 iMac and current i5?

I'm on the eve of receiving my 27" i5 iMac. It will be here tomorrow. It is replacing an early 2008 24" iMac that had an 8800 gs with 500 gb hdd, and 4gigs of ram.

What type of differences can I expect? I am in the middle of ripping my DVD collection. It was running about 2 hours per movie using handbrake. What will this new beast do? I also game, use steam playing l4d and tfc civ 4&5.

Anyone upgrade from the 2008 iMac to the 2010 i5 got any answers?

The i5 will destroy your current machine in handbrake, no question. Probably considerably better in games as well due to a significantly better GPU.

The I5 didnt have a chance at destroying my 2008 Imac. It died on its own free will, and apple couldnt fix it so they replaced it with the I5....

Haha, well I assume you mean it's the quad i5, and handbrake takes full advantage of multiple cores from what I understand, so it should essentially cut your encoding times in half.

Any ideas on actual numbers? It took my old machine about 2 hours for a 2 hour film...am I looking at an hour for a 2 hour film now? Or less? Or more then an hour but less then 2 hours?

Yes it is the quad core I5...

SuperDrive is the bottleneck when ripping movies and it's still the same in 2010 iMacs. If you rip a lot DVDs, get an external DVD drive since they are much faster than those crappy laptop drives what Apple uses

For a component in such a classy machine, the SuperDrive is an embarrassment. It takes about half an hour to rip a DVD (and makes a lot of noise doing it, too...), and the external Blu-ray reader that I built (internal BD drive, external USB SATA caddy) takes about ten minutes. To say nothing of the fact that it also rips Blu-ray discs...! (through Windows 7/Boot Camp).



I never transcode myself, but I'm sure the i5 will do very well for you. I've owned mine for almost a week, and it's a pleasure to use.

I bought an external drive due to my superdrive failing after 6 months in my 24" Imac. I got it replaced, and never used it again. I prefer my external...it is quieter, and faster over firewire...

I usually rip using ripit or mactheripper, and get them on the hard drive and then let handbrake do its thing....I was just curious what to expect...I guess I will find out tonight!

Good question, do they work plug and play from any manufacturer? You don't need to use the Apple macbook air one?

the Macbook air one is the same superdrive fitted in your iMac , nothing special there
and it will only work out of the box with the Macbook air and the mini server
on other Mac's you need to hack the hardware ( some soldering )

and yes every dvd rw should work, but because of speed reasons i would advice to go for a firewire external dvd rw
