alberta, canadia!
I just called my local computer parts store asking which RAM would be the best for my macbook. The guy said to buy the muskin over the kingston because the muskin was compatible with apple. a friend of mine who also has a macbook, has the kingston and says it's fine. my question is, should i buy the 'apple compatible' ram or stick with the kingston(that will save me over $60) ?

thanks!

Thanks!
that's what I thought too, but this being my first mac, i wanted to be sure.

On another note, the manual recommends matching each dock with the same same amout of RAM (ie: 2 X 1g or 2x 512). am I ok with adding one 1g stick now (giving me: 1x256 + 1x1g) or is that ill advised?

Thanks again!

Yep you can do that. Apple recommends matching pairs to improve data rate but it's not like putting 1280MB instead would hurt you in any way.

Mate to answer your Question, i have a macbook and i had one gig of mushkin RAM, and it was fine, my mate order two and i borrowed one. Today mine came in to the store and it was kingston 1 gb stick and it fitted fine. When u put the ram in it feels stiff to put it in, but that happened with both of the 1gb sticks. I say whatever cheaper go for, cause they both do the same thing. Also, i read on the site about the mushkin ram it doesnt fit apples, but if it ddr2 667mhz and 200 pin it will fit. Enjoy the new speed, its so much better.
