Hi guys, I'm new the forum and to the world of Mac. Soon I would like to get a Dual 2.5ghz G5... I like the OS and I like where they are heading.

Several programs for the PC I use, I would like to use similar programs for the Mac, hopefully they are as good if not better than the PC.

I rip my CDs using CDex on the PC, and encode them to MP3s using lame. So my question is, is there a good program for Mac that can rip my CDs -and- use lame to encode them to mp3? Is lame even available for Mac?

Another program I use quite often is DVD Shrink... This takes a DVD, no matter what the size, and lets you rip some useless things out of it (say Spanish or French subtitles) and even choose the rate of compression so you can fit it on a non-dual layer DVD. Is there a good Mac equivalent to do this?

Also, I want to make sure (please forgive my ignorance on this) that when they say Dual 2.5ghz they mean two 2.5ghz processors, and not two 1.75ghz that simply "add up" to 2.5ghz. Could someone clarify this for me?

Thanks,
Bryan

Correct. 2 processors, each running at 2.5GHz.

As for your other questions, try looking at http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/ for the DVD ripper. I know there's at least one out there, but it's pretty expensive, especially if you're in the US (it's 49Euros). I think that iTunes can rip using LAME plug-ins, but don't quote me on that one. I know there's some LAME encoders out there for Mac OS X.

MacTheRipper is one that I've used for DVD ripping before. There's another one, oooh, which has a really strange name, that I can't recall, that's more focused on ripping down to a small enough size to burn on a smaller media. I think it starts with a "T" ... if I can remember, I'll post back.

EDIT: It was Handbrake that I was thinking of  "T"...meh. Anyway, a more detailed thread on this topic is located here

I'll only answer about lame. LAME is an open source cross platform set of codecs and libraries for encoding and decoding MP3 files.

LAME for OSX on somebody’s .MAC account.

Audacity is a recorder/editor that uses LAME across platforms. Download it at Sourceforge. The LAME encoder can be found there.

LAME just for iTunes

Check out SoundFlower and SoundFlowerBed for free audio routing by Cycling74. AudioHyjacker is a great pay program, but SoundFlower does quite well.

I listed some great sound software here.

Also check out HyperJeff.com's OSX pages. Sort by license and the kind of utility needed. Until you can afford the expensive software, free and opensource ware can help you meet your needs. http://Sourceforge.com, http://VersionTracker.com, and http://Tucows.com are also good sites to visit. There are a whole lot of other sites that have the free stuff like MajorDownloads, but I can't list them all. I like HyperJeff the best for OSX.

Right on.. I was wishy washy a year or so ago about it, and now I simply won't pay it. Finally some payback for non-USers who buy US software!

Does DVDtoOneX do anything interesting that HandBrake (which is GPL'd) cannot?

IIRC, handbrake (re-encoding to avi/mpg4) and dvd2one (dvd compression) perform different functions.

Ahhh, so handbrake is not good really for burning back to DVD, perhaps? I think it can be used for making VCDs...alas, I have no superdrive.

For ripping songs just use iTunes. All the features you want are built in. For ripping dvd's use Mac the Ripper, for burning them use Popcorn. Popcorn automatically compresses the file onto the 4.7 gb dvd, you also have the option to take out extra stuff you don't want like different languages, you can also take out different surround sound settings. Or you could just burn the main movie.
