iPhone X different SIM card and iMessages

Does the change of SIM cards / phone numbers have any effect on SMS messages and iMessages ?

I never use messages anymore, but with one person I've noticed that the messages won't even show 'delivered' (or 'read' for that matter).

But I thought iMessages and the SIM card are not related in any way..

I have never had iMessages affected by a new sim. As long as don't change your email address/phone number associated with your account, you will be fine. It only stores phone number and billing info on iPhones.
