Different spelling languages

Hello all,

I bought my first Mac one week ago, so excuse me if my question is a bit stupid, I'm pretty sure it can be solved quickly.

I'm from Denmark so the language i write in is usually Danish. Now, i like my Mac OS in english as all my program are in english too.

Why the [expletive deleted] can't i choose Danish as spelling language? I can install Mac OS in that language so i know it excist. I tried allready to install Danish afterwords from the install DVD, but still no Danish between the languages i can choose between as the spelling language.

Mac OS X doesn't come with Danish and Norwegian spelling dictionaries. Just Swedish. It doesn't matter if you choose Danish as your OS language. There will still be no Danish spell check.

So if i choose Danish as the main language when i install Mac OS (tiger), then i still won't be able to check spelling in Danish but in several other languages? That sounds really stupid? Is it possible to download/buy language packages from somewhere?

Yes, I use Norwegian as the main language, but I can't spell check in Norwegian. I don't know if you can buy a Danish package anywhere else.

Hahah! This seems to work perfectly! <test>Det jeg skriver på norsk blir ikke streket under med rødt!</test> While words in English are correctly marked as unknown to the dictionary.

You just have to install cocoAspell, follow the instructions in the README file and download the aspell-dk (or is it da) dictionary. I'm going to donate to the developer, too. It's nice of him to give this out as donationware.

Hmm interesting. I switch to Spanish often when I need to do homework for my Spanish class, and am able to spell check. Wasn't aware not all languages include spelling dictionaries.

Wow, you can curse in two languages. I never got that far in German (except by mistake). I assume what you want is spell checking in Danish. You are not getting it either because your machine is set for English in the International System Preferences, or because your machine has no Danish dictionary.

Since your machine is only a week old I suggest you call Apple Denmark and ask. Otherwise Google "Danish OSX Dictionary" and you will find some commercial products and some pages written in Danish that I can not read.

you can do it

My wife signs in (os 10.4) and her screen is in danish, I sign in and mine is in English. Easily done in Preferences-> international.

That's great because Aspell is available for several languages and if they're just a shell application away, it sounds like quick relief and someone who should be rewarded.

Thank goodness Japanese, Chinese, and Korean are supported in the writing process due to the fact that characters have to be looked up/created.
