Is it possible to use a different storage location for music & podcasts?

Using iTunes, I have all my music stored on an external HDD, which is the way I prefer. However, it's a PIA to connect up the ext HDD everytime I want to update my podcasts & sync with my iPod Classic.

Is there a better way? I don't want to hook up my iPod to my laptop and sync without the external HDD for fear of that process messing up what's already on the iPod.

thanks in advance

Disclaimer: This is just a guess, and so I wouldn't recommend you do this until you get reliable advice that it'll work properly or until you test it on devices you don't care about first.

Maybe you could have you itunes folder wherever you want and then use an alias within the itunes folder that points to a folder on your external drive.
