Is it just me and I should get my new Mac Pro repaired or are others having problems getting digital audio from the nMP?

I replaced an MP-2009 that was using TOS optical cable to my sound system. Got a toe-to-mini-toslink adapter. Can plug it in to my 2013 Macbook Pro and see the Sound Preferences output screen switch from "Built-in" to "Optical digital-out port"; removing adapter and plugging in headphones switches to "Headphone port". Everything working as expected.

However, going to the nMP, plugging in the adapter still shows "Built-in"; while plugging in headphones switches the sound panel screen to "Headphone port". So is my nMP broken and not recognizing the toe-to-minitos adapter? Or is there some other "magic switch" needed to activate the "Optical digital-out port"?

Thanks!

Try a different S/PDIF adapter…

Are you sure that you are trying to use the line out, and not the headphone out?
They are slightly different.
Both will support audio output (and headphones), but only the line out supports digital audio output, and the alternate headphone minijack is the only one that supports a headset (with mic).

Duh! <slap forehead>

Had to almost stand on my head to get to my system, saw the headphone icon and assumed the other one was microphone input. Sound Preference Pane only listed the one built-in output. When I put the adapter into the other port, a new line showed up in the Sound Preference Pane for Digital Out.

Thank you for the great advice! Probably should have spent more time with the manual; there is a manual isn't there? :D

Can you Plug in a microphone or line Jack?

May I ask You a question related to your post.
The headphone port is advertised as intended for Headsets with a built in microphone.
Can you Plug in a microphone or line Jack on that port without the headphones part of any normal Head Set, and use it as a microphone or line Input?

I cannot help you with that question as my microphones are all XLR condenser models that I use with a USB digitizer.

Perhaps someone else has tried what you are describing.
