MP is way overrated!...marketing...marketing...
I have seen a comparison between Nikon D2Hs which is a professional 4mp camera and Nikon D200 which is a 10mp semi-pro camera and the difference in resolution was minimal if any.
You could enlarge the 4mp file up to 10mp and it looked similar from D200 file. Needless to say, on my computer screen the 4mp file from D2Hs looked the best.
I cannot recommend any model, but my advise is to forget all these parameters and pick the model which you like the best.

Personally I've owned a Canon, and they always get very good reviews but I was not very satisfied with mine. granted, this was purchased a few years ago, a 3mp A70.
I now own a Casio Exilim Z-750, a beautiful 7mp wonder. Much more user friendly, while also having a rich feature set. and the most important thing, it takes great pictures. sometimes the megapixel number is not the most important thing. I recommend taking a look at this model. I bought it after a LOT of research and I couldn't be happier with everything about it. EXCEPT ONE THING: it has to be sitting on the dock in order to either charge the battery or transfer photos. Unlike most cameras where you can just plug in a usb cord. This can be annoying when you go somewhere w/out planning and bringing all the extra stuff along. I knew about this when I bought the camera, tho, and it's worth it to me.

I have a Casio EX-Z750 as well. The image quality is really good. At first, I was a little worried that I could run out of battery in the middle of a vacation and I would not be able to just buy a set of AA batteries, but the battery life is very very long. I once went about a month without charging and I took a lot of pictures with flash (I think I filled up my 1GB card) and recorded quite a few mpeg4 movies with it during that time. I like it quite a bit.
I'm with these other guys... Although, I have a 5 megapixel Casion EX-S500. The EX-S500 takes nice shots as long as you can keep your camera still (the anti-shake technology in this camera is pure bs). The only other annoyance I have is that you must use a cradle to charge the Camera and/or sync it to the Mac or PC.
Good news for you, the EX-S600 is out now (6 megapixels), and available for the same price, or cheaper online than what I paid for mine.
