iPad Pro Dilemma need more Gb, stick with 10.5"?

Happy with my 10.5" apart from its the 64Gb as I now want to add my iCloud photo library which is 30'000 plus, and recently bought quite a few iTunes videos which are large.

I'm hoping that rather than go to my iMac I will do a bit more organisation, deleting and basic editing on my more readily available iPad than having to go to the iMac for my photos and videos as at the moment just keep adding to them on my iMac, so I'd like to start a bit tidy up and messing etc.

So for this I need 256Gb option. So was thinking just buying second hand/refurb 10.5" 256Gb and selling my 64Gb, maybe a £200 upgrade cost. Or go full out and get the new 11" 256Gb, upgrade cost about £400 I think.

Reason thinking of 10.5" again is bought the 10.5" ASK about 2 months ago, just thought was a cool cover and bonus keyboard, but haven't used it much, paid full price from Apple. Also have the v1 pencil

I probably don't use the Pro bit as much but do love gadgets! I liked to watch movies sometimes so prefer the 10.5" at least over the 9.7 for more screen estate, can't imagine the 11" is that big upgrade screen estate wise over the 10.5"?

So has anyone else been in similar situation? Should I go full out and get 11" meaning have to sell my ASK as well?

The 10.5" still being sold and still seems a beast in terms of processing power etc and the screen apart from 0.5" smaller is same quality I believe?

I'm in the UK as well so we don't seem to get as good discounts.

Best Buy in our area only has the 11” on display, I do own the new 12.9”. I think the 11” looks great for a portable divice with very little bevels.

If you are NOT using the ASK (did you include that in the upgrade?). I would sell it along with the 64gb and go with the 11”. Instead of the ASK, why not get an inexpensive logitech bluetooth keyboard. I just bought the K780 - it is a bit bigger than K380. But I love being able to have 3 divices connected to it (you just select 1,2 or 3)

Since you are already all in on the 10.5 accessories and are happy with the performance of what you have then it seems like the prudent thing to do is just upgrade to another 10.5.

Happy with performance yes, but I don't know what the 11" is like.

Accessory wise, don't use the pencil much at all. I got the ASK as had voucher for Apple and thought handy if ever wanted it.

Just wish had more storage. I have a 128Gb SanDisk iXpand but can't use that for iTunes movies or iCloud photos unfortunately

Good call. Stick with the 10.5”. The 11” has a lot of “version 1.0” type issues. And depending on your use of wired headphones the lack of a headphone jack and broken dongle implementation can be a real nightmare. I went from an 11” to a 10.5” and am very happy.

Not too bothered on headphone jack, imagine it's for some, but if it was for me I'd just buy a dongle to go wired, personally don't see what the fuss is. I have wireless headphones on the very odd occasions I do use it.

I had a 9.7” and upgraded to the 11”. After 10 days I returned it and bought a new 10.5”. I’m very happy with my 10.5 now after a week. I don’t miss the 11” at all.

There is zero color/brightness/quality difference between the 11 and 10.5. The only difference is the curved corners and about 160 more pixels horizontally (vertical is identical size and pixels when held landscape). Since the 11” is closer to 16:9 aspect ratio it is slightly better for video watching (less black bars). Conversely it is worse for apps because all prior iPads were closer to 4:3 so everything must be optimized for the unique aspect ratio of the 11”.

Note for those that care about wired headphones the dongle isn’t a solution because it has major bugs.

Here are some notes I made during the switch:

The 10.5" has:
Pros:
- Headphone jack <- big one for me
- Optical image stabilization on the camera (yeah, I do occasionally use my iPad as a camera. shoot me.)
- Has a much more robust feeling case structurally. I believe the curves actually improve structural strength.
- Has a home button; not as cool as Face ID...but notably faster to tap/double tap than to swipe up for multitasking
- $699 shipped new (BH Camera sale $100 off). $250 savings over 11". There are likely to be many more deals on the 10.5" vs. the new shiny 11" and 12.9"
- Works with my daughters old Apple Pencil so I can borrow it. I don't use it enough to buy one for myself.
- Maybe I had bad speakers on my 11"; but the 10.5 inch sound seems more precise to me, and I don't have the balance issue I was experiencing (was shifted toward left side on my 11").

Same Same:
- 4GB RAM, 256GB Storage
- Same exact weight to the ounce
- Exact same color accuracy and brightness as 11"
- Still has USB 3 speed over the lightning port for my camera card reader; its actually exactly the same 5GB/s as when you plug the camera card reader into the new USB-C iPads
- Works with the dozens of lightning peripherals and chargers I have everywhere in a house with many devices
- This is still considered a "new device sold in 2018" by Apple. It has 4GB RAM. My guess is it will support exactly the same future revisions of iOS as the 11" for the exact same number of years.

Cons:
- No Face ID. I really liked this and will miss it. Animoji was really cool also! However, I would have likely used Animoji like twice with to make my wife laugh...and then never again.

This is a worry a bit, wouldn't mind seeing a picture of same film on both. Didn't realise about aspect ratios. I'm sure the apps will be updated eventually

Yours will work but it may only be a USB 2 speed. So about 1/10 the speed (480Mbps vs 5Gbps).

You will want to look for one designated “USB 3” for full speed.

Many many devices work including cameras, camera card readers, microphones, MIDI, audio interfaces, keyboards, network adapters, etc.

Not sure but I was almost maxed out without enabling it anyway.

I then had to delete apps when wanted videos on from iTunes, Netflix, Amazon prime etc. Was sick of the messing.

I also once get photos on, as soon as you start editing clicking on the thumbnails they start to download and so use more memory.

I've just added about 20 iTunes movies on, used 100Gb, enabled and let sync photos and still have 90Gb free, much better.
