Dim/Low Light Lens

I am an absolute noob when it comes to photography but I am very interested in photography. I recently purchased a Canon 40D and using the kit lens (28-135mm f/3.5-5.6).

I'm looking to take some pictures in very dim to dark lighting. What is a good lens that takes pictures well in dim/very dim to dark lighting? I was thinking of a fixed lens since they have the biggest aperture but not sure what is best.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

EF 50 f/1.8 is the classic choice. Only $80.

If you have crazy cash, you could go with the 1.4 or 1.2...

In case you want something wider, the 35 f/2 is a very nice lens. better focus and built can be found in the 28 f/1.8 (or the fantastic but very expensive 35 f/1.4).

photozone has all the lens-reviews, especially for 1.6 sensors.

I have the sigma 30mm f/1.4 - i use it more than any other lens. as for selling my 50mm f/1.4? my only regret is that if i decide to get a 5dmkII i'd have to get a 50mm lens. but i'd probably get the f/1.8 version then.

Remember the depth of field at 1.8 is going to be quite shallow. You tried a tripod and longer exposure?

having the option of shallow depth of field is a good thing. You can always use smaller apertures if you want. it does raise a good question, what kind of photography do you want this lens for? an IS lens may be better suited to the application.

for the record, i also miss the nice bokeh from my canon 50mm f/1.4 - the sigma isn't as nice
