hi guys. Dimm slot 5 has failed on my late 2009 Mac Pro tower. It did have 8 x 8gb, but I’m now wondering what I should do with the config of remaining ram.

Do I just leave it with 7x8gb in all slots but number 5, or is there a better configuration now I have a failed slot? The Mac does have an issue (once every few weeks) where it will randomly restart which I’ve now put down to the failed dimm slot. Thanks in advance.

Try reseating the CPU nearest that slot. The memory controller is in the CPU. All three memory channels go across the CPU socket pins.

7 occupied slots will work fine. You’ll lose a little memory performance. If what you’re doing is VERY memory-intensive then you’ll see performance drop. If it’s normal desktop use or CPU-intensive, the performance difference likely won’t be noticeable.

get a LED light and check for dust in the slot, iv had that problem.
i have a air blower for camera lenses i use to blow out light dust (and it's for lenses so no gunk sprayed) if you have normal caned air follow the instructions so you dont get gunk on everything.
iv used both with no problems for general computer cleaning

o and check it's not just the ram slot by swamping the ram in the bad slot to a good slot and see what happens
